Do you have a lot of family nearby for DC to grow up with?

I have a lot of family in the NYC metro area, but almost none of them have kids. Most of my cousins with kids are in Boston, FL, CA and Dh's cousins are in Ohio. My 2 cousins that live on LI and have kids are very different than me, we don't have much in common and rarely hang out.

I didn't grow up near family, so I was excited at the thought that my kids would have cousins to play with, but that hasn't worked out.

Just wondering if other people have the same situation.

DH's nieces like about 10 minutes away from us. DD is 14 months - and our nieces are 3 and 6 so now its a big age difference, but when they get older, it won't be too much, hopefully!

Yes. I have one nephew (3) about 10 minutes away and my other nephew (7 months) about 30 mins. away.
My other nephew (2) and niece are in NJ. Tough to get there, but, we make it happen and vice versa.Chat Icon

noChat Icon DH is in the military so we don't live close to any family. We are the only ones with kids right now anyways.

Most of my family is on LI, but my only brother so far with kids just moved to MA. And DH's brother's with kids moved to CT. So none of their cousins live close, although they have their grandparents and aunts and uncles close by.

Yes my cousin and his 3 children are 4 houses away. My brother and his 3 kids are 1/4 mile down the road and my other brother is 1 mile away. Our niece is about a 10 minute car ride

My dad was USAF. I liked it growing up, but now I get a little jealous hearing how people are so close to their cousins and stuff.

Nope. The closest family is in the Bronx, but DS is the first of that generation. His closest cousin on the other side is in Rochester. That's why I'm trying so many mommy GTGs!

Yes, my mother lives about 2min away driving and my sister with her 4children live 2mins away in the other direction. I love it! My kids and my sisters kids are extremely close and my oldest son and my one niece are the same age. They will go to jr high together my sister and I can't wait, they are very protective about one another.

No. My ILs are the closest, and they aren't so excited about the baby at the moment. My sister lives 1.5 hours away, and she is excited, though I think she won't see tons of him. There are no children his age in my extended family, who are scattered all over NY, NJ, PA, and FL.

It's too bad--I have so manyhappy memories of holidays with my cousins. Oh well, we'll have to find lots of little friends for him in our area.

No. Both of our families live in MN (where we are from).

We just went back for Christmas and it was fun to see DD interact with my three nieces and my cousin's two girls. In total (both families), there are six girls under the age of 4 to play with. And two more babies coming in June! I'm kind of sad that we won't be around for all the family functions.

Yes, my husband's siblings are mostly on LI and all have kids for DS to grow up with, but my sister is in NJ (2 hours away) and although she doesn't have kids yet, I'm sure one day (soon hopefully) she will and I wish we were closer.

Re: Do you have a lot of family nearby for DC to grow up with?

We do.

I have my sister's kids about 6 minutes away. They're older so unfortunately they're losing interest in their younger cousins.

My other sister has 2 kids the same distance away. Hers are closer in age but since we don't speak - the kids don't see each other.

My SIL & BIL have BIL's 2 kids nearby but we don't see them nearly as much as I'd like.

All of DC's cousin on DH's side are older and live OOS.

My brother is expecting a child and she will be one year younger than DC's. For several reasons over 20 plus years, I only speak to him due to my father needing care. I doubt our children will have much of a relationship and it will be better that way.

Re: Do you have a lot of family nearby for DC to grow up with?

yes! as you can see in my avatar pic, the cousins are VERY close Chat Icon Chat Icon

there are 8 cousins, age 8 and under.
my 3, my sister's 4, and my brother 1.
(we're hoping for more from both brothers Chat Icon)

we make sure the cousins see eachother several times a month, we very often swap kids and they have sleepovers with their cousins, two here, one there. they have tons of fun memories and experiences together. we especially love listening to them at nite before falling asleep.

they all completely adore eachother.Chat Icon

Re: Do you have a lot of family nearby for DC to grow up with?

depends on what you consider nearby, DS has 4 cousins that live about an hour away.
I consider that nearby since we see them at least once a month and really, even if we lived in the same town I don't think we'd get togeher much more often than that.

My SIL just moved 3 miles away from us we try to see them at once a week if schedules allow.

Re: Do you have a lot of family nearby for DC to grow up with?

We are fortunate enough to have lots of cousins nearby. My DH is one of 6 and everyone has kids. The cousins in our famiyl range from 23 yrs old to 14 months - most are under 7 so it's lots of fun for the kids. My brother has 3 kids too, 2 of them are young and I even have a nephew who is 1 day younger than my DS. My DD is the princess though, there are very few girls in the family and she is the youngest so she gets treated like royalty.
