I know someone who had their employer say that they were "laid off" instead of "voluntarily quitting" so they could collect unemployment and other benefits from the company.

And the couple made plenty of $$$$$ at the time.

Ive heard of this being done too.

and I know a few people milking the system.. makes me wanna make an anonymous phone call sometimes, but I dont have the guts

not necessarily "working" the system, but my mil has her ways. she by no means scams, but she likes to get something for nothing.

Yes I do...a couple that I know

A: Got their house from a dead next door neighbor woman at a price way below market value - I'm not even sure how they pulled this off, but apparently their family "witnessed" her telling them she would sell them the house at said price before she died.

I do know someone, who has 2 kids, gets welfare for her rent, gets foodstamps, medicaid or whatever it is, and works FT off the books, so she makes a killing!

I do and if I knew anyone doing this or anything else, I would make that call in a New York minute. My husband and I worked hard for everything we have and I will be da**ed if I will knowingly let someone use MY tax money in that way.


The problem is that there is so much corruption in the system from top to bottom, that while your phone call may (or may not) win a small 'battle', the war is an impossible one to win. Just look at all the recent leadership fraud scandals in Nassau, Suffolk and NYC. The little guy probably just figures "if the leaders are stealing from us, then I'm gonna steal from him." And the cycle never ends.

I represent people who are trying to get disability. There is a perception out there that the majority of the people on disability are scammers. I disagree. Of course I have seen people who were trying to scam the system. It would be a total lie for me to say I have never seen it. I just do not think that it is happening in a huge percentage of disability claims but I do think that a lot of people perceive that it is.

I do know someone who has always worked whatever system he could. Small business loans, Fannie May loans, etc. While he does extremely well for himself, he's completely lost my respect.

His father was the same way so he learned from the best.

a girl i grew up with did! to the tune of tens of thousands of $$$
she collected anything she could - public assistance, food stamps, medicaid, etc....all while living with her parents, (who owned several pieces of property) paying NOTHING for rent, working off the books making a killing!!!!! she eventually had enough $$ saved up to put a NICE big downpayment on a house!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not exactly in the way you just mentioned, but my ILs do it. They lie BIG TIME on their tax return. This year for example, and I quote "I hope I can find an accountant who is WILLING to sign off on this."

They do it in restaurants -- just this past Sunday at Friday's they said "just tell them you don't like you're dinner. They'll give us something for free."

I heard someone at work the other day say that they were going to get divorced when they retired because they would get more social security that way

I think some people do it because they need attention, just like a needy kid. Any attention is better than none.
