with some people it's like going fishing, and they keep telling you how big the fish is that they caught and the more they tell the story, the bigger the fish becomes

I think I do that sometimes, mostly to help the person feel like I can relate to their vent, commiserate with them, etc. not to use it as a segway to my problems, not at all.

Yes, I had a friend like that and I had to cut her off. You know, I'm calling to tell you that my grandfather is in the hospital...oh, I'm so sorry, what flavor ice cream should I get, I can't decide? 
It's been 4 years, and I've never regretted it for a minute....

YES! I know someone like this. I can never go to her with my issues because it ALWAYS becomes about HER. And she's also one of those self-drama-creators.

and they go on and on, dwell and dwell, always bring up the same thing over and over again- bleh even from the past- nothing better in thier life but to bring up the old and go on and on, like nothing is new or good in their life and yours is unimportant or they are so jealous they have to constantly bring up things just to feel better about themselves. so it becomes about them and only them-

Definitely. It's just up to each one of us whether we deal with it or not. I've limited conversations with people like that. It really bothers me, but then it makes me feel like I'm selfish, because all I want to do is vent about MY issues 1st... And I'm SO not a one-upper!

This sounds horrible to say - but I've cut off friendships with people that have too much drama in their lives. Not bad things happen, but self created dramas. Just too emotionally draining.
Thanks for making me laugh about it.
I've done this as well. Anyone or anything that creates any type of emotional draining in my life is out. I've also cut off relationships if they get to that point.

sometimes i dont even get to finish what i'm complaining about before she cuts in about her problems and then i just look at her and think to myself- um...okay, what are we talking about?
its so annoying

there is a girl at work, I am going to lose it on her. She is a one upper and constantly turing conversations about her. She also talks about how good she looks, she lost weight, constantly bragging. I am on my last nerve with her. Every time you turn around she is bragging about something and we hve to listen to her life. UGHH sorry for the vent.
