Re: Do you let your dog sleep with you at night?

I read this a while ago....

No, your normally submissive dog will not suddenly turn into a dominant monster if you let him wiggle onto the bed at night. Nor will you be raising your young puppy up to be an aggressive monster. It is true, however, that allowing your dog a position of authority can exacerbate an already existing dominance or aggression problem, and just as true that removing that one privilege will not solve your problem (and if it's not a problem yet, it will be).

When it's going to be a problem:

When he's taking over the pillow and there's no room for your head. Seriously, if he's slowly started to take over the prime soft spot in the bed, and you're left grasping the very edges of the pillows while he stretches out in luxury, it's time to demote him back to the foot of the bed, or off the bed altogether.

If he races you to the bed, settling himself first, before you get there. There's no problem if he's been snoozing in your bed and hops off as soon as you show up, but another altogether if you need to order him out of the way, or physically haul him off so you can lay down. If he's challenging you for authority, you need to put a stop to it immediately, and make him work for everything he wants or needs, and reassert yourself as the pack leader.

Your dog will need to be demoted to the floor, or possibly even removed from your bedroom altogether. Remember that the bedroom, and especially the bed, are the most comfortable and desirable locations in the house, and belong to the leader. your dog's presence is a privilege, and he must not forget that.

Now...Misty DOES sleep in bed with us - but if we tell her to get up or off the bed she does, when we get settled she jumps back in and curls up on the bottom of the bed with her head on my legs.

The reason I ask is this, The trainer said to stop Tiny from sleeping with us at night. He says it is a way of Tiny dominating us.

Danielle and I like when Tiny sleeps with us, but last night I figured we would just let him sleep downstairs, and not 5 minutes after we went to Bed tiny came scratching on the door and crying. I felt so bad I let him in and he slept peacefully the whole night in between us.

Do you think I should do what the trainer says about this?

Scott

Your trainer is absolutley correct. Let him sleep in your room but not in the bed with you. Letting him sleep in the bed delivers the messege that he is your equal.

I don't beleive it sends a message that he is your equal...the dog wants to sleep with his pack, that's what dogs do....locking him out is a sign of rejection to the dog whereas if he knows his place in the bed or room he knows he is part of the pack.
He should not be able to dominate the bed, though.....

I look at it this way - how much time do our dogs really spend with us? Maybe five waking hours a day? Letting them sleep with us is a way to spend more time with them and enhance the bond that is already there.

Well said. I LOVE sleeping with my dogs, just their cuddly bodies in my bed are so comforting to me and to them I would think as well. We have pets to LOVE them, why not let them cuddle with their loved ones in bed? They just want to be near us, with us....and that is why we have them!

It's random with her sleeping under the bed (yes, under), foot of the bed or on top of our heads.

Henry and Jake both slept in bed with us until we moved into the new house. Now they sleep at the foot of the stairs on their dog beds. At first they cried but got over it within a couple of days.

Unfortunately yes, they both do. We are trying to rid them of this before the baby comes in March. Our cocker spaniel now is sleeping under the bed, but our mini poodle is a little prince and refuses Chat Icon

Re: Do you let your dog sleep with you at night?

Of all the things we have been told to try to break our dog of his dominance, we saw the most results when we stopped letting him in the bed with us. In fact, we allow it from time to time now and if we allow it for a few days in a row, we can see him reverting back to being the guy in charge.

This is such an intneresting thread!!
My beastie sleeps with me...she is 130 lbs.

I have been trying to read up on this because I am not sure what is right. (While I love having her in bed, logistically, it is a bit hard.)

Well, the trainer is right but -

What kind of dog is it?

To a dog, sleeping at a higher level or the same level than humans makes them feel more dominant and in charge. (in a pact, the highest ranking dog would always get the best spot)

If you try to move your dog does he growl or try to bite you? If you try to get him off the bed does he growl or try to bite you again? Those are signs of a dog thinking he is more dominant that you and that is when I would no longer allow him on the bed/couch. If moving him or getting him off the bed isn't an issue than I don't think it is a problem.

Our dog is a cockapoo - they are notorious for dominance issues and he has bitten us several times. He is no longer allowed on the bed/couch.

Re: Do you let your dog sleep with you at night?

Funny you should mention the growling. Tiny does that to Danielle when she tries to move him...or she moves her leg or something and he is laying against her.

When I move him he doesnt growl....

He usually lays between us.

Tiny is a 10lb Pure Breed Chihuahua.

He slept with us last night....In order for him not to come upstairs we are going to have to put him in his crate where his bed is until he gets used to the fact that he cannot sleep with us anymore. If we dont, he will be scratching and crying at the door all night and it is annoying.....

Re: Do you let your dog sleep with you at night?

Our dog sleeps with us, but she in no way thinks she is dominant. She is a very submissive dog and has never growled or bared her teeth at us.

Usually I get into bed, and she actually waits until I get situated, then she jumps up. She usually sleeps by our feet, but if she starts taking up too much space we tell her to move, and she does. Only a couple times have I woken up and find her head on my pillow. But she just loves pillows, I don't think she was trying to be dominant. She just loves to be close to us.
