When people close to me give them, I kind of feel like they could have made a little more effort. When my studetns buy them I love them, because they don't know me personally well enough to be shopping for me anyway.

Yes. I love them. I am very picky about clothes, bath products, etc, so I hate to have to return things. If it is from DH though, not so thrilled.....

I totally agree. It frustrates me to no end to have to return something that someone gave me because of a "no gift card" rule. Great - let me spend my Saturday returning crap that I don't like/need/want and get something I do.
I get gift cards for people mostly when I know that they are saving towards something and I know where they are going to buy it, or for Mani/Pedis to the place where they go, restaurants that they like. . . .I try not to give GC to places that are generic like JC Penney and Macy's.

Love them from anyone except DH! I would be insulted if DH didn't at least try to find something that I would like. He's the one who's supposed to know me best! I want him to be thoughtful.
ETA: DH did once get me a thoughtful gift card, from the place I get my eyebrows threaded. That was okay!

YES, only if it is a store or place I would shop at. I got a home depot card from and uncle one year  you know I needed that.

love them! but I tend to not use them for a loooong time. example - my MIL gave me a GC to Macy's LAST Christmas, it's still in my wallet! whenever I go to that store wanting to use it, they're having a sale that gives you an additional 15% off if you use your Macy's charge. that's why I have not used it. I think next time I am there, I'll just buy some makeup... since that is never discounted anyway.

I don't like getting them during our family gift-openings. I like instant gratification when I open gifts, even if I have to return it. I remember one year I got all gift cards and some candy. I was very disappointed that I had nothing to show off or play with.
I don't mind them if they come from someone who doesn't know me well though.

Yes, i like getting them from someone who doesn't really know me.
No, If the person is a close friend or relative.
I think they should try and spend time on picking out a gift.

I like them if they are from a store I actually shop in.
However I also like receiving an actual wrapped gift that I can open.
