Do you NEED a lawyer for a closing on a house in NY?
If someone is buying a house from a family member, Do you need a lawyer?

YES. It doesn't matter who you are buying from I would say you should get an attorney because there may be things with title that need to be cleared such as certificate of occupancy and you doon't want to ruin a family over something that could be easily prevented.

i bought from family and we both had lawyers. there were so many technical things that we never could have done it on our own.
when we refinanced we didn't use a lawyer for that.

We used a lawyer when we bought our first home from my FIL. He did not have an attorney. My FIL held the mortgage so there were no banks involved.
