Do you prefer a canister or upright vacuum?
I need to buy one asap and was thinking of going the canister route this time. I hate trying to lug the upright up and down my stairs.

my parents have an oreck upright which is SUPER light. It just has an equal pricetag.

i switched back to a canister last year after years of uprights. I never felt like the uprights worked as well on floors as the do on carpet & we don't really have any wall to wall carpet anymore. The canister is easier to carry.
My mom had central vac in our house, DH wanted to put it in when we renovated but we were in a rush & didn't do it

I swear by my upright.. I don't think there is a huge difference besides you drag one and push the other, it all depends on how well the product is made, and works. I had a canister that was crap, and I love my upright, but I'm sure theres really great canisters out there that are better then my upright.
I just love the fact that I take out the container and dump it all in the garbage without a bag, and then I take the filters out and rinse them in the sink. I can actually clean out my vacuum and know I'm not dumping anything back on the floor.

Upright...For this reason..I remember growing up my mom and gma both had canisters. I just remember them both having to lug all of these pieces out just to vacuum...didn't appeal to me.

I honestly prefer upright. Not because I have ever had a problem with a canister, but I have never used one.

I prefer canister. It is much better for my allergies. In the past, when we would vacuum, I would not be able to breathe for days (even wound up in the ER). With the canister, it does't really bother my allergies. Plus I think it cleans much better.

i have one thats both.. its a bissel upright, where part of it comes apart to be a canister vac.. its great for when i need to do the basement or stairs... most of the time i use it as an upright, though

We have a canister one bc we don't have carpets in the house. It is a lot easier to manuever on the steps & I feel it does a good job cleaning.

I went through about 4 uprights, and recently the last one broke so I went with a canister and I love it..... Cheap too. I got it Home Depot for 140.00 I think.....

We bought a $400 Kennmore that is supposed to be similar to the Electrolux canister.
At first I was like   that I am spending $400 on a vacuum.
But it's so nice and it cleans the floors (and now our carpet) real well. Worth the $$$$$.
If I am going to buy an upright, i'm buying one that's cheap (under $100). Something to simply hold me over until I am ready for a good cannister.
