Re: Do you prefer to cook or bake?

I prefer to cook.

I find that it is sooo much easier to be creative and make various recipes my own.

When I bake.. I feel locked into the recipe. I can modify some things to alter the flavor profile a bit.. but I can't TRULY be adventurous or I risk my dough falling apart or my cake failing to rise or my cookies being too dry. Baking is very precise.. you forget baking soda or you run out of egg and the whole thing might be screwed.

I feel like if you know a few basic cooking techniques (a few knife skills are helpful too) you can create almost anything - mimic almost any dish you have tasted and even improve on them. I find it harder to do that with baking. Laziness wins!Chat Icon

I agree word-for-word.

Baking is a science and if you screw up the proportions, you're likely to be up shit's creek without a paddle.

I like to bake, but I LOVE to cook. There's something theraputic and completely relaxing in puttering around in the kitchen and making a meal :)

I like to both. I guess I like baking more. I'm not very good at either though.

I prefer to cook for the same reasons that the pps listed--there's more creative freedom.

I'm also better at cooking than at baking, and I like meal food better than dessert food.

ITA. theres so much more leeway with cooking. and most meals can look a little suspect but still taste delicious. mose baking should look a certain way to look delectable

Both. But I do a lot more cooking than baking. Sometimes I just get in a mood to bake though.

I guess I misunderstood here. Thought it was cooked (stovetop) dishes vs baked dishes. In that case I like to cook

Re: Do you prefer to cook or bake?

Bake...although I enjoy cooking as well.
I like the final result of baking...I think it looks so much prettier than cooking. And I like that the recipe needs to be followed for it to work, so it's sort of mindless.
Cooking I like because you can be so creative and throw things together and when it works....it's impressive! It doesn't look as pretty as baking though.

Re: Do you prefer to cook or bake?

Cook! I love the prep work - getting the ingredients, chopping, sauteing, seasoning, tasting...

I stink at baking, unless it's a really easy recipe. It just never comes out as good as it should. There's just no room for error or adjustment from the prep to the finished product.

I do make some mean diet brownies though Chat Icon

That's what I love about baking. It IS science! Once you learn more about it and why certain ingredients are used in certain ways or added at a certain time to activate another ingredient, you give yourself more freedom to play around with recipes. I *rarely* follow a baking recipe exactly and it usually comes out just fine. The more I learn, the more I can tweak my recipes however I like!

I like both, but I LOVE cooking. In another life, I would have gone to culinary school. I eat something in a restaurant that I like and then figure out how to make it more delicious at home.

Re: Do you prefer to cook or bake?

I was always the baker growing up. Now that I have my own family I have become more of a cook. I do love both. I am generally a recipe follower and agree that baking always produces much "prettier" results. But I love tweaking a recipe and cooking for my family too

Do you prefer to cook or bake?

I'm more of a baker. I love cooking, but I've always baked more. I used to be a chemistry major and I think the draw of baking was always the precision of it, which is a carryover from studying chemistry for so long.

Baking!! I feel locked in with cooking, and it is so complicated and messy and uses so many dishes and I hate it. Baking is less precise and the results last a lot longer, and you can make so many things with very few dishes.

cook.... for these reasons.
I also feel like you see result faster when cooking, whereas with baking you have to wait a hour to see what you put in the oven.

The same here, but, I go all out cooking, I don't think of myself as lazy. I hunt down techniques, obscure herbs/ingredients, etc. I don't think of it as lazy, but more adventurous. Baking I feel like I need to follow rules, cooking, I make my own rules. And either you like it or you don't.
