Do you talk to your kids about guns?
Even before the story of the 5 yr old who shot his sister, I am terrified of DS encountering a gun.
He LOVES guns. He's a little boy. His favorite toys are his nerf guns, laser guns, etc. he could play all day with them. His toys look like toys, not real guns.
I have told him if he ever sees a gun anywhere... In a home, park, etc.... Even if it looks like a toy, to never touch it. I hammer it into his head at least once a month. We were away at a friend's house who I know is a hunter. He had the guns away but I still emphasized to DS to not touch anything at all that looks like a gun.
Do you have these talks with DC? I know there are so many things to worry about as a parent, but I feel this needs to be on the same list as "look both ways when you cross the street" and "don't talk to strangers".

I think our sons are about the same age. I have spoken to my DS (and my DD) about the issue as well. The first time he came home from school after the Sandy Hook shooting we had a very long talk about guns, and what to do if he encounters one. We have had subsequent conversations about the issue.

Yes! We live in CO and lots of people hunt so even the peds around here suggest talking to your kids about gun safety. They know if they see a gun at a friends house to immediately go get a parent. My boys love playing with their nerf guns as well and we always tell them to aim at "things" not "people".

Re: Do you talk to your kids about guns?
My situation is probably a little different than yours.
My FH is a Police Officer and my children are a little bit older than yours I believe. My boys are 13 and 10.
With that said when we bought our home and I knew the gun was going to be in my home we made sure that we educated the boys on gun saftey and just how dangerous they can be. My FH let them examine the gun, hold it ( empty of course) so there is no curiosity about it. The boys also know that if they ever have any questions about it they can ask and they can see it again. We have 2 weapons in the house, one is my Fh's on duty weapon and the other is his gun from when he worked in the city. That gun is always locked up in my house .
I beleive it is important to educate your child(ren) about guns. Just because you never know with this day in age who has a gun in their home and what your child has the potential to encounter. It is a very scarey thought but I would them to be in the know than the alternative.

Our household is very similar.

Same here. And we also instruct him that if he sees someone casually pick up a gun (like a friend, child, etc) he should always leave by walking behind the person since the gun will be pointed in the opposite direction.

Re: Do you talk to your kids about guns?
DH is a cop, and exactly the same here. My 12 year old DS has been to the gun safety class through the US Navy Sea Cadet course and is actually a certified sharpshooter with a .22. That being said, he's super responsible and would never dream of touching a gun if it was out, or not under the correct circumstances. He can recite the gun safety rules backwards and forwards. DD is 7 and is probably the most interested in DH's guns. She asks to take them out at least twice a month and DH always complies right away. You have to eliminate the mystery around it.... if it's taboo they will go looking for trouble. At the same time, my kids understand that these are dangerous weapons that can kill someone.
