Yes. It really doesn't matter what you are currently making and you never know if they will check.
The job you are interviewing for is negotiable, just ask for whatever salary you want.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
I have always told the truth when/if asked about what I am currently making. But I also let them know that I have a firm salary requirement that is above what I am receiving currently.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
We always check salary before we hire someone.
And if we found out they lied we won't hire them.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
Yes. Huge deal breaker for some companies if they found out you lied.
Most companies I worked for checked it.
I find it best to tell them what I want to make and see what they say. Then I decide if I like the $$ or not.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
I always tell the truth because I am a bad liar.
Just wondering how does the hiring company check a person's previous salary? When I left my past jobs, they had me sign something stating that they will not reveal my salary to anyone unlesss I say it's ok.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
i bumped it up once by 5K and I was lucky that it worked out. I will never do that again though, b/c at my last job money never came up until the very end, when they asked for a pay stub. I imagine i'd be out if i had been caught lying....

I'm a terrible liar and they can verify the figures if they want to, can't they? I'd hate to be caught lying .........

Re: Do you tell the truth?
as a freelancer, I make far more than what most staff positions offered. I actually had a difficult time putting a number on what was desired. I was told flat out whoever says a number first...ANY number (what you make, what you want, etc) shows their hand and is at a disadvantage.
I tried to never really say a # unless directly asked and then I still managed to skirt the issue.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
I sort of have to, only b/c my boss pays me my salary + $3,000 in cash which in the end is still my salary, but i explain that to them.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
I do not tell the truth and I do not give someone permission to check my salary. I am in sales though so many of my former positions have been more commission based with a small salary. I have effectively negotiated much higher salaries than a previous job without ever discussing what I made.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
I would always tell the truth because if they found out I fudged what I make then I would not have a chance with them.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
I do. If I am looking for more money I come armed with skills and comp salaries in my field for salary negotiations. Or if there were additional benefits, like pre-tax deductions, FSAs, matched 401k, flex time, more vaca, etc, I add these as reasons for accepting a lower salary.
I do not believe in lying on an interview, the risk is to great and once you are discovered as a "liar" the job may never look at you the same.

Re: Do you tell the truth?
In all reality, it's "personal and confidential" information if a company you are interviewing with wants to know your salary. Every company I have worked for, they CAN NOT give out that information.

I completely agree. Also, I signed a confidentiality agreement with my current employer regarding compensation, which I intend to honor. Any potential employer who has a problem with that is probably someone I don't want to work for.
