DH and I are really getting paranoid with Alexa.

Is it possible to detect signs at 2 months?Chat Icon

I don't know for sure, but I would think definitely yes, too early!

What is it that is concerning you?

I think it may be too early but when people look back after a diagnosis they recall all the signs that were there early on.

What does the Dr. say?

Sorry to crash but as a teacher for kids with special needs, from my experience kids do not exhibit symptoms that early or rather they do not display symptoms that early. What is she doing that majes you feel this way?

I had mentioned during the week that she is very sensitive to touch. And also she smiles but not often at all. And it takes a long time to get one out of her. She always has that binkie in her mouth!!!

She also only cries when she is hungry, wet or when her binkie falls out. Otherwise she is a very quiet baby.

Am I just being really paranoid? I am starting to freak DH outChat Icon

Re: Do you think 2 months old is too early to detect Autism?

It is WAY too early.
My nephew has severe autism and honestly it was not until he was closer to 1 year did we really start to see anything. At 2 months old many babies do not do much- they might smile or not some days. You have an easy baby. That is all.

When DD was two months I rarely got a smile, and when I did, DH always said it was gas. It wasn't until the ped told him she was smiling that he believed it. She also only cried when hungry or wet (losing the binky never bothered her).

So, I would say, ummm, yes you're being paranoid.

Re: Do you think 2 months old is too early to detect Autism?

Personally, I do not think you can see signs this early. So much goes into figuring out if a child fits on the spectrum, and what you described sounds like many, many different things. She could very well have a sensory issue with being touched, but that doesn't mean she'd be placed on the spectrum. Just like kids who have textural issues with eating wouldn't automatically be put somewhere on the spectrum. She sounds like a normal 2 month old, to me. If in a few months, you still notice that she's not engaging in eye contact or is extremely sensitive to touch, then speak to your Ped. and see what he/she says.

I wouldn't worry, she sounds fine Chat Icon As far as the sensitive to touch, are your hands cold maybe?

Thanks everyoneChat Icon I will keep an eye on these things and see how it goes. She is just so different then Andrew and I think I am already comparing them too much.

I was going to say just that....you have a comparison now, and so I'm sure it's easy to see things as being "not normal" when really, they're just different from when Andrew was an infant. I mean, I do it, too because my sister just had a baby, and looking at him, I just think about all the ways he's different from Ava and I can see how I might worry when I have my next baby.Chat Icon

As a mom of many children...who has baby sat for many children...They are ALL so very very different.

What works for one might not work for others...etc etc...

I ask about the smiling b/c when my daughter was an infant she showed no signs of any delays..she rolled, sat, talked, etc all on time....the only area that she was delayed in was to smile...she didnt smile until she was 3 months old. A doctor once told me that delayed (and 3 months without a smile would be considered delayed) smiling can be indicative of a broader delay...

Now keep in mind that this was what one doctor told me and I have not researched this. Or read it any where else...

But Im sure she is just fine...She's just happy and content...

Also...keep in mind..that you are an old pro now when it comes to this mommy thing. She knows mommy knows what she is doing so she's relaxing....

Re: Do you think 2 months old is too early to detect Autism?

it usually is not diagonosed until 15 months but babies can exhibit behavior that is linked to autism. 2 months is way to early. parents usually start to feel like their child has a hearing problem aroun 6-8 months. i would not worry. at 2 months its a startle reflex

I wouldn't worry, I think it's too early to detect autism. She's probably just going to be your shy quiet one. That's how my DD started out.Chat Icon

Absolutely too early - however, I can start to see signs in 4 mts, and definitely by 6 mts.

Way too early. I would try to stop being neurotic, she sounds like a normal little 2 month old.
