Do you think a string cheese is a similar choking hazard to a hot dog?
Would you compare a string cheese to a hotdog regarding choking hazards? Assume the child does not want to pull the strings off the cheese and will eat it whole. Thoughts?

Yes. I always cut up the string cheese into strips so I have no battle of wills.

I would venture a yes.
I'm really relaxed as a parent, but I have a big fear of choking.
I hate even those little Puffs that melt in the baby's mouth. I don't use them...not until they are way too old for them.

Re: Do you think a string cheese is a similar choking hazard to a hot dog?
I agree. I thought it was a hazard too but I know alot of kids in my DDs class bring them whole quite often. So now she is telling me she doesnt want me to rip it in half. I just tried to give it to her whole and I panicked. I just cant do it, so I ripped it in half for her (half at the very least).
I just wasnt sure if I was overreacting since alot of kids in her class eat them whole.

I always cut them up. Look like a hot dog in terms of size and shape so to me they pose just as much of a choking hazard as hot dogs.

I've only ever given it to DS in strips, not whole. I would imagine it's the same choking hazard; they're only a little thinner than hot dogs, but they're just as solid (aka they don't dissolve on their own).

When DS was under 1, I gave it to him cut up but once he had his teeth, I gave it to him whole.

a hot dog isn't a choking hazard b/c it's a hot dog...it's a choking hazard b/c it's a perfectly sized round plug. anything that fits such a description is a choking hazard.
we don't do string cheese in my house but if I did, I would cut it in half. I cut his olives in half. I smash his blueberries, I dice his sausages. anything resembling the size and shape of his windpipe goes under the knife.

I didn't, until my friend saw her daughter choke on one before her eyes.

Re: Do you think a string cheese is a similar choking hazard to a hot dog?
Yes......It is coin shaped when bitten...As is a whole/baby carrot etc..
I only started giving my DS whole cheese sticks this year (he is 6) and I watch him like a hawk even though he knows to peel it...
Mozzerella cheese in general is a choking hazard (pizza etc..) because it can wad up and become lodged in the throat blocking the airway.

yes and my younger dd gagged badly (not fully choking) on a piece of string cheese she had bitten off - I cut them up after that

No. Most hot dogs have skin which can be tough to chew. String cheese is soft. My DD always did fine nibbling on string cheese, I never cut it up.

I see what you are saying. That's why I asked. B/c it is a different texture than a hot dog but the shape is the same. So it confuses me! But you are right. You CAN nibble on a string cheese but you really can't nibble little bites of a hot dog. You generally bite a chunk off of a hot dog. However, many kids won't nibble the string cheese either. They just bite large chunks as well, so I still get worried with it. What string cheese do you use? We get Polly O and honestly they are so firm...barely soft IMO.

I buy Trader Joe's string cheese and they are super mushy so I never thought about it but if I remember correctly Pollyo is much firmer so i guess I would cut that up!

Polly-O. They are hit and miss on softness. Sometimes we get a soft batch, other times not. But like I said, she's never had a problem.
I don't give my DD obvious things that will choke her (popcorn, small candies, grapes, hot dogs, etc. etc.) but I do think there is a point where you also need to stop giving them nibble size pieces of everything. The will never learn how to chew, break down food, and swallow if you never give them the opportunity to do it. I think you give them a false sense of security when everything you put in front of them is tiny sized. They need to learn how to take small bites, chew, and swallow. But that is just my opinion.
