IMO the texture of string cheese is nothing like a hot dog, and no, I don't cut it up.

My DD eats the string cheese but she likes to pull it apart or have us help her.

I guess i would consider it a choking hazard like hotdogs if she didn't.

a hot dog isn't a choking hazard b/c it's a hot dog...it's a choking hazard b/c it's a perfectly sized round plug. anything that fits such a description is a choking hazard.

we don't do string cheese in my house but if I did, I would cut it in half. I cut his olives in half. I smash his blueberries, I dice his sausages. anything resembling the size and shape of his windpipe goes under the knife.

Exactly. its funny the knowledge out there is always so strongly against hot dogs BUT there are so many other food items I consider to be the same as a hot dog.

So string cheese I cut in half vertically) so its not as thick as when it is whole. DD started liking olives over the holidays, and those too I cut in half. She also loves grapes but those I cut in 3sChat Icon especially the big ones.

I am paranoid as well!

it's not about the texture. it's not about the actual chewing. it's about it staying in a whole round first bite and plugging up the windpipe.

my son gets plenty of things to eat whole...pieces of bread, croissants, cookies, oranges, pizza etc, he has all of his teeth and can handle anything. I am not afraid of the way he chews his food. I am afraid of the time he can't chew his perfectly round plug sized bite.

it has ntohing to do with texture or firmness, it's simply a shape issue for me.
