Do you think "first homes" will outnumber "forever homes"?
When we started looking at houses, we intended on getting our "forever" home. Because of a variety of factors, and a need to 'try out' neighborhoods, we decided to be frugal and get a very small house (2 bedrooms) that we could easily afford.
For us, it was a great decision. It's enabling us to spend money on the house and property in our first year here that we probably wouldn't be able to afford if we had the size house we originally wanted.
With the economy, price of gas, price of oil, taxes, and just the general cost of living being so high, do you think that people will look to a smaller, more affordable home as their first? And trade-up later when they are more secure with their finances?
For those looking, are you considering "first" houses and moving in say 10 years?

Re: Do you think "first homes" will outnumber "forever homes"?
We bought our house with the intention of moving in 10 years or so.
It's by no means a "starter home" - it has 4 bedrooms, full basement, 3 full bats, great yard. But - it doesn't have some things that we want. A garage. A huge kitchen. We could always dormer down the road and add those things. We may do it - who knows. I guess we'll see where we are 10 years from now!

This is what we're doing. We bought our house with the intention of it being our forever house (also because we are just old already too! ) We've been in the house just about 3 years and have slowly been doing updates and decorating. We're about to do a few larger projects in the next month and then we have one more large project we are doing next spring/summer and then we're done!

We bought a house that we could easily keep as our forever house, however, I can see us moving to something bigger at some point, also. I guess we'll just see where life takes us!

Where we live now is intended to be our "first home". It's what we can afford right now, but not ideally where we want to be to raise our kids. There is no backyard, no garage, etc. We always talk about getting a "real" house one day

I think many people buy homes intending for them to be first homes, but then circumstances prevent them from moving up to a larger home so first homes become forever homes unintentionally.

ITA!
Actually, this is the case for both my parents and DH's parents.
We are house hunting, and ideally looking for a "first home" that we could stay in long term if we really have to ...
What that comes down to for us is that we aren't considering homes that have less than 3 bedrooms, and we'd like a house in a reasonable school district.
It may not have all our "wants" ... but hopefully enough of them that we can stay if we need to.

Re: Do you think "first homes" will outnumber "forever homes"?
We're not looking at any homes where the size/location would force us to move. If we choose to upgrade, fine, but if not, we will have the size and location that we prefer. We bought a condo as a starter home, but in terms of houses we are only looking at houses with at least 3 bedrooms/2 baths.

Re: Do you think "first homes" will outnumber "forever homes"?
honestly, i think a lot of people's first homes become their forever home. we bought a co-op first with the intention of living there for at least 5 years (it was 2 bedrooms) but after 2 years, we bought our forever home. it was my grandparents house, so out of sentimental value, i am never moving.

We bought our home with the intention that it would be a forever home....which is why we didn't settle for what we wanted in a house. We can always expand outwards if needed to be, but our home is our home now and forever.

Re: Do you think "first homes" will outnumber "forever homes"?
Funny that you mention this....when we bought our house we figured we'd be here for years...now 4 years down the road, we are thinking...we don't like the HS here, there has been an increase in crime and we want more property, no neighbors behind us, a 2nd bathroom and the laundry room on the first floor...there is so much flexibility these days I think more and more people have "starter houses". At the time we bought, this house was a perfect investment for us but I have a strong feeling we won't be here forever and we'll grow out of it...

This was the case for my parents, which is why I did not want a "starter" home. Our house isn't huge, but it has three bedrooms and 1.5 baths that can easily be converted to two full baths down the road. There is potential to expand, which was important to me.
DH and I both don't like change very much. We wanted to feel settled, like this was our home forever. Our house needs a lot of updates, but we know we'll be here to do them for a long, long time.

Re: Do you think "first homes" will outnumber "forever homes"?
DH bought the house and it is a starter home (a Levitt ranch). It does have 4 bedrooms and 2 baths but not dinning room.
But after much thought, it will most likely be our house for many years. We love the location. We are in the ideal location for DH and the train to the City.
We calculated that even with an extension, cost to remodel, it will still cost us less than buying another bigger house.
So we will stay in this house until we are ready to retire somewhere else than LI. As long as we live in NY, we will stay in this house.

I think we will buy a small home, and just pay off the mort. early so we can retire early. I always thought I would have the starter and then upgrade. I hate moving, and I don't want to have a mortgage forever. I also want a smaller home now to save on utilities

We bought as a starter home (3 bedrooms) that we could reallly afford - but we made sure we loved the school dist. in case circumstances prevented us from moving.
I feel like we made the right decision - we left ourselves room to move or to stay.

We bought our forever home. I dont want anything bigger and I can barely handle our 40x100 lot - a large yard would kill me.

my parents bought a first home...and are still in it over 30 years later.
our house now we bought with all intentions of living in it forever if need be, but i still think we will either buy a summer home and end up moving there (say, the jersey shore) or upgrade down the line to another house in *hopefully* another area.

I think this could be our forever home...there are so many things I love about it...It's a good size but of course could be bigger but I guess we will see what the future holds. My fear is buying something else and regreting it.

This is the reason we chose to move out-of-state. My mom's "first home" became our forever home, and she's 65 years old and still dreams about her forever home. She's moving down next month so that she can finally by the home she's always wanted.
This is the exact reason we left Long Island, as much as we would have loved to raise our kids there.
ETA: Our first home could very well be our forever home--we bought this house with that in mind. It's big enough and has everything we would need.

We *think* we just moved into our forever house. We made sure that the neighborhood was nice enough to live in forever and if we had to, we could always add on if we needed more bedrooms.
