Do you think neighbors in wealthy areas would have issue with you having a rental in your house?
I'm talking houses easily in the million dollar range.

They can report you to the town. In most cases, apartments are illegal. Taxes could be assessed. I believe Town of Oyster Bay was thinking of making a hotline where people can report illegal apartments.
I know by my parents home in Massapequa, there are tons and none of the neighbors do anything about it.

Yes - neighbors in any area do this.
Now that we own a home, I'm surprised at how much the neighbors are up in my business. I'm also surprised at how much they pay attention to who comes and goes, and what you are doing.

yep. Many illegal homes/apts.
Not that tenants are necessarily bad (I rented for yrs before buying a home!), but rentals in a housing development isn't always ideal. it adds to more cars parked/traffic on the streets, they not always care about the surrounding neighbors/upkeep of the house, etc. Of course not everyone, but some.
If I lived in a very exclusive area I would want other homeowners surrounding me, so they can take care of their properties and such.

IMO, I think neighbors in any area would not like an illegal rental

I think neighbors in less wealthy areas would take issue with this.
And I know people in them who have reported neighbors to their town.

I should have said in my above post, most people have an issue with this (wealthy town or not), b/c ultimately we all pay the price when a home isn't assessed accordingly.

I don't care if it's a wealthy area or not, I'd have a huge problem with illegal apartments.

Why would it bother anyone if someone was renting? I could care less if my neighbor was renting an apt. in their house. It has nothing to do with me.

People get upset for many reasons.
More people = Less parking, more trash, more noise, less security (you don't know who all the neighbors are)
More people using the school system = higher taxes
it's tough... people bust their *** to pay taxes on LI and just can't afford to do it anymore and then they rent... but then that actually can raise the taxes and/or tick off the neighbors

Because it's an additional strain on utilities (like the sewers). It's more students at the school.
And both of these are valid points when that homeowner (or renter) are not paying additional taxes back to the town to cover the increased population.

Yes, there are many rentals in my area and I am getting very annoyed. There are so many cars on the street and it's hard to get down. I am actually thinking about reporting them.

Re: Do you think neighbors in wealthy areas would have issue with you having a rental in your house?
I don't think it has much to do with the value of the homes within the area - no one likes illegal renters and few people like any renters at all.
We live in a working class neighborhood (houses probably in the $300k-600k range), but our neighbors tried to push one of the houses in the neighborhood to "get the renters out." DH and I had just moved in and were surprised by these nice people insisting that our neighborhood "isn't for renters".

Re: Do you think neighbors in wealthy areas would have issue with you having a rental in your house?
until there are more rental communities, there will be illegal rentals. In order to stay on LI and with their families, people sometimes have to rent out portions of their home.
I rented illegally. I don't know what I would have done if there weren't illegal rentals.
I would not be upset if the renters were contributing to society, working and didn't make the neighborhood look like crap.
If the landlord is on premises, then there is a better chance of the home being maintained. Both times I rented, the landlord maintained the property and we parked in the driveway.
The two homes next to me have three generations living there and the other has two generations. That means more cars, more trash..etc..I think that LI is that way due to the high cost of living here and the lack of real rental communities.

I used to rent a cottage in Old Westbury....you don't get much more into the millions than that!
I doubt the neighbors even knew we were there, since they were over 5 acres away.

Re: Do you think neighbors in wealthy areas would have issue with you having a rental in your house?
If you are not paying taxes for that extra income, it is illegal because it is tax evasion. I don't think people would be so bothered if the homeowners were declaring the income they made from the apartments. Honestly, if the only way you can afford to live in your home is to do something illegal, then maybe you should move to a less expensive area or not own a home at all.

I personally would be pizzed!!! Long Island is a suburb. If everyone starts renting out part of there homes, it will turn into queens.
ETA: schools will be overcrowed, LIRR would be packed, no parking

Depends on the town. I know with the Town of North Hempstead you are not allowed to rent your home. We have someone on our old block renting and everyone is always calling the town on them.

ITA
It's one thing to rent out your entire house (as a one-family rental) and is possibly more common in some affluent areas than less affluent areas. It's a different thing to add an illegal rental apartment.
