Do you think New York will ever be “fixed”
I’m genuinely concerned for the future of New York.
We are losing people at the highest rate.
Taxes continue to skyrocket.
Many companies learned from the pandemic that they can operate remotely and in turn hire non New Yorkers for less pay.
Our infrastructure is deplorable. Some of the highest taxes and you can’t drive on certain parts of our main roads.
How do we get on to the road to recovery? I’ve never had a conversation with another parent who has said “I hope my kids stay here and raise their families here”. It’s “I hope my kids leave NY”.

Not anytime soon and yes, kids can't afford to stay here in NY. Their student loans are too high and salaries too low for the increasing cost of housing.

Re: Do you think New York will ever be “fixed”
Like any area that has been affected by COVID, NY will bounce back in time. Regardless of the taxes and high COL, Long Island will always be a desirable place to life because of its proximity to what is arguably the greatest city in the world.
When I was a kid my parents use to say that it would be really hard for us kids to stay on the island but we did and we managed. What's key for younger people trying to stay on the island is their chosen career path. Depending on one's occupation, living on LI isn't a struggle despite the high cost living, it all comes down to debt load and salary.
That being said, we finally moved away because we were sick of the nonstop, endless traffic, stress and overpopulation of the island. We knew that other states could offer more for less. In our case, NJ isn't cheap but you definitely get more for your money, especially in the town we landed in. If I took the house and property we have here and dropped it in Stony Brook where we were living, it would easily be pushing a million dollars which is RIDICULOUS. As fond as my memories are of the island, we always planned to encourage our children to move out of NY because although it has positives, there are so many other beautiful places to live that can offer a wonderful quality of life at a fraction of the cost of NY.
NY will survive the exodus because there will always be people who never want to leave.

Do you think New York will ever be “fixed”
You're thinking in terms of people who already live here. NY will always be aspirational. People want to move here. The people who can't afford NY will be replaced by those who can.

Yes and it will only be for rich people. There are so many other desirable, clean places that cost a whole lot less than here. it is insane how a small starter home costs $400,000 and taxes $10,000. For what? Dirty beaches, dirty and pot hole ridden streets, crime, drugs.

But even with that, people still find it desirable because the island offers conveniences, high paying jobs depending on industry, beaches, proximity to the city, etc.
Like Lucky said, there will always be people who want to move to NY and those who want to stay in NY regardless.

For proximity to the city.
I know many companies are remote now but it won't be that way forever. The pendulum will swing back, people will return to their Manhattan offices and those people will need housing within commuting distance to the city. Those who don't return will be replaced by people who want to live here.

U could have moved to a less overpopulated, with less traffic in LI, no? There’s still some of those here.

Honestly, not really. Long Island end to end is just packed. I grew up in Nassau but moved out to Suffolk to escape the congestion there but these days, Nassau isn't much better than Queens and Suffolk feels like the old Nassau.
My DH worked out in Bohemia so we could have gone even further out east towards the forks but then you know what it is like out there in the summer and fall, the roads cannot capacitate the crowds for the Hamptons, the wineries, the lighthouses, the farms, etc. Unfortunately, LI just isn't big enough for the population anymore.
Where we are now is night and day from the island. In the shopping areas it is crowded but we chose to buy a house in a more rural area that has no big box stores at all so there is NEVER traffic in our town which is so much less stressful. It's just me, the scenery and the deer. I don't miss the LI traffic insanity...............but I do miss the pizza, bagels and BEC's!

There are many high paying jobs on LI as well. With so many households having two income earners as well it makes affording the island much easier, especially if both have high paying jobs. Regardless, it's a pricey place to live but people who really want to be there figure it out. For myself, I just really wanted to try something different.

No, hubby and I were just talking about this. Now when Biden gets in, Im sorry but all your taxes are going to go up. My hubby is worried about his business, now that they increase Corporate taxes for his business. I cant leave yet. I have 8 more years.

Biden has no intention of taxing the middle to lower class, that isn't even what Dems stand for. It is Republicans who tax us to death while giving all of the tax breaks to corporations and the very top tier wealthy crowd. That is traditionally how it has been for decades.
I am not worried with Biden in office, I think in the end we will all likely be better off.
ETA - Businesses are a different animal and I could see him raising the taxes on them since Trump slashed them SO ridiculously low.

I don't live on the island anymore, but I still live in NYC. I work in the city and I think that wherever I'd want to live on LI is Eastern Suffolk and it is not tangible to commute to lower Manhattan from there.
Nassau and even Western Suffolk are just like Queens these days.
Could I afford it? Absolutely, but my quality of life would be terrible. The whole idea of working in Manhattan and having your family on LI is very antiquated with both parents needing to work outside the home.

It's funny every time a dem takes office I hear about how the taxes are going to go up, but I never get a tax break when there's a rep in office. All I ever have is increasing taxes no matter who takes office. Maybe I'm doing something wrong if everyone is getting tax breaks under reps but me.
And if reps didn't lower taxes for all their billionaire cronies maybe the rest of us could get a break instead of having increased taxes to cover the shortfall of the people that get out of paying their fair share.

There are several towns (in Suffolk) that are not overpopulated and don’t really deal with the traffic that other towns do, usually towns that are close to highways, main roads, big businesses will experience a lot of traffic.

It all depends on priorities. Some families sacrifice space for an easy commute. Some want the big house and yard so they suck up the commute. There is no right or wrong answer.
That being said, no, I don’t see how anyone could live in eastern suffolk and commute to the city in a dual income family without a full time nanny. And maybe that’s the sacrifice in that scenario.

Do you think New York will ever be “fixed”
I think it's the area. Taxes are for more affordable upstate NY and I know a few who have relocated upstate. People seem to be moving to Texas and North Carolina. My yearly taxes in Suffolk are 4200, not bad but that is not the norm and I dont see it getting more affordable here in the bear future

Usually towns closer to the water, the farther away from highways, main roads, etc, the more space, less traffic, less people u’ll have. Towns like Fort Salonga, Nissequogue, Old Field, the Northern part of E Setauket, etc. Sure, if u live in these towns and u work in the city, or any industrial LI town, u’ll def find traffic when u commute but u’ll also find urlself in the same position in other states...if u live in a quite area but work in busy towns.

Couldn’t agree more. We live in a really good town with unfortunately high taxes but were able to find a house with decent taxes because it’s a super old house (built in 1895!) and it hasn’t had many owners since it was built. But that’s def not the norm and I know taxes will significantly go up (for the next person) if we put it for sale based on all the updates we’ve been doing to it.
