Do you think people trust being online too much?
I go on another messageboard and many of these woman put too much personal info out on the web. While I am not a stalker, lol!!, if I was, I could easily find these women and children. They show many pictures of their kids and themselves, give their real full names, say where they work and live. I guess I watch too much To Catch A Predator but am I wrong that you should not, in this day and age, give out too much info to people online?

Yes, I think people do.
I stopped answering the threads about personal information a while ago.
Think about it... What is your middle name? What high school did you graduate from? Where do you live? What car do you drive? etc. etc.
Wouldn't take too many answers for a person to piece together who you are... next step is address, phone number... it's happened before.

ITA with you. I NEVER tell my real name online. On other boards I make up a fake name as they have found out what school district I am in and I don't like that. I think it is great to meet new people but you really do NOT know who someone is online AND if there are lurkers out there who are just looking for info they can use. I guess I hear too many stories but I feel it is better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?
this happened to me years ago when i first started being in chat rooms. the guy saw in my profile where i lived which of course at the time i didn't think it was a big deal. my picture was up also. we had been chatting for a few days. he came online one night after i was out downtown and he said that he saw me in the bar but was afraid to approach me. i freaked and closed down everything to do with that website.

ITA with you. One of the woman on these boards won't say her dh's or kids names, anymore but someone proved to her how by just telling everyone that years ago and it still being up on the threads, they found out her address, saw a picture of her home, how much it is worth, how much she pays in taxes, etc. To me, it is very scary.

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?
this is a new s/n because i was recently stalked. i was someone who thought "it can never happen to me" where someone i know comes on here and actually finds me and reads my thoughts. but it did. i never posted my full name but i did post what town i was from and what high school i went to. NEVER AGAIN! i dont want my stalker to find me and go through my personal thoughts ever again!
so to answer your question, yes people are far too trusting online.

Thanks. These women tell me I am crazy. Not to insult anyone, but the majority of them are from the midwest. There is only one other woman from NY on there with me and she is a NYC cop, supposedly. I really don't believe many people on other messageboards as anyone can say they are someboday else.

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?
I am on one site that has a "members only" section where people talk about more personal things and have even posted addresses to exchange holiday cards. Sure, anyone can join that site, but we all have access to the full list of members. I'm not saying it is totally safe, though. Years ago I was on a work/law related site where people could easily make it look like they were another member. Someone posted some nasty stuff, pretending to be me. I knew exactly who it was, a former co-worker. I made sure their boss found out and the person lost out on a performance award.

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?
I think I feel a small sense of security since I live so far away and don't really reveal anything that could locate me- yes, I live in LA but so do 2 million other people. I don't post my town or where I work, let alone my last name.

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?
I think about this a lot. I always thought that to some extent it had to do with age, I'm 41 and much older then many people who regularly post. I think that I am just less comfortable with the internet, then people who are 10 years younger then I am. I have also sworn up and down to my husband that I will never post pictures of our kids, house, etc... He is in IT and always tells me how easy it is to "locate" someone.

Most of these woman are in their 40's and 50's though and they are very trusting. Could this be a NY thing??
