I think about this a lot. I always thought that to some extent it had to do with age, I'm 41 and much older then many people who regularly post. I think that I am just less comfortable with the internet, then people who are 10 years younger then I am. I have also sworn up and down to my husband that I will never post pictures of our kids, house, etc... He is in IT and always tells me how easy it is to "locate" someone.

Most of these woman are in their 40's and 50's though and they are very trusting.
Could this be a NY thing??

You got me. There probably are some regional differences regarding trust, privacy, etc. Although when I think serial killer the first thing that comes to mind is some back water nowhere place. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?

I do. Thanks for posting this to remind us!

I am sure people could probably easily figure out who I am from this site alone!

I think I've told this story before about a friend of mine........she's a mod on another message board I go to.

Well, in the past she was very free about where she worked. She used to complain all over the message board about it.

Well, one day, she had to ban this guy who used to always post controversial stuff.

Not too soon after, she got called into her boss's office.

"Someone" had emailed her boss all the "threads" where she used to complain about her job. She didn't get fired, but did get a harsh "talking to", especially because it became obvious that she was posting FROM her job.

Not to bring what I do for a living into this, but I really have noticed that there are a lot of people who should be in psychiatric treatment who tend to flock to message boards as a "substitute". Be careful on here!!!

this is a new s/n because i was recently stalked. i was someone who thought "it can never happen to me" where someone i know comes on here and actually finds me and reads my thoughts. but it did. i never posted my full name but i did post what town i was from and what high school i went to. NEVER AGAIN! i dont want my stalker to find me and go through my personal thoughts ever again!

so to answer your question, yes people are far too trusting online.

Thanks. These women tell me I am crazy. Not to insult anyone, but the majority of them are from the midwest. There is only one other woman from NY on there with me and she is a NYC cop, supposedly. I really don't believe many people on other messageboards as anyone can say they are someboday else.

Ohmygod, I've noticed that too!

There's this chick on that other message board I go to who is from the mid-west and I swear, she targets all of my posts! She has this deep-rooted anger that she never became a social worker, so always likes to "argue" with like everything I say about my work.

I've even got nasty private messages from her and her boyfriend who she met on that site.

She also is pretty free about her info as well.

They also love to "argue" that when people who live in NY complain about the COL, that it's "our choice" to live here, spend $$ foolishly, etc. etc. They just come off as being bitter and angry to me!

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?

I just sent you a FM! I also used to go to this other board that doesn't exist anymore, but I remember writing that it was my belief that it's a woman's choice whether or not to go through with an abortion. Again, all the mid-west posters blew up at me for my beliefs and told me that I was wrong and should rot in hell, etc. etc. for believing abortion wasn't necessarily wrong.

I guess that's the "bible belt" coming out. Maybe we should start a spin-off thread about regional differences.

Oh, I talk to a woman who lives in Missouri and tried to tell me she doesn't live in the bible belt!!! Whenever you provide evidence of the things you say and they disagree, they tell me I am lying and making up stories!!

Re: Do you think people trust being online too much?

As long as my children are in my home I will always be careful not to give out too much ino!

When I'm living alone I'll be careful also as I was a victim of a horrible, violent crime from someone I knew from a friend that broke in and attacked me pretty bad.

The DA pressed charges and I testified(horrific experience) he went to prison and I'm still really cautious. When I'm living alone I'll still protect myself. You never know who might be out there.

I'm not in NY. I'm also not naive and think about my welfare when it comes to personal info I put out there.
