Re: Do you think people will under-prepare for Sandy bc many thought Irene was a "let down" ?
I'm not too worried to be honest. I know I can handle losing power. I've been camping since I was a little kid so that doesn't bother me. I've even made cheddar and broccoli rice over a campfire! We'd immediately cook any meats and put all refrigerated items in our cooler along with whatever ice we have to prolong it's lifespan. we do however plan to tape garbage bags over the basement windows and maybe even try to block them a bit somehow...but we got no flooding during Irene. I have my lanterns charging, I know where my candles are. I have 5 gallons of water just in case. We always keep lots of canned tuna in the house and PB & J too. I also plan to chop up some wood for the fireplace to further provide some light if needed. We have a wind up radio so we can listen if need be. Washing all laundry tonight and tomorrow just in case we do lose power so we'll have clean clothes. I feel perfectly calm and prepared as much as we can be.

I personally think you are a fool if you don't prepare.
No. You don't have to fight over peanut butter.
Should you have flashlights, batteries etc? Yes.
Should you secure things outside? Yes.
Should you have some food and non perishables ready? Yes.
But to sit back and say "well Irene was a let down" you would be a fool. Some places got smacked. Some not at all. It couldnbe reverse this time.
And I do not think Bloomberg over reacted.
Bloomberg may not have over reacted but he is still an A$$ hat. Schools are oging to be open as shelters but he won't close schools. He'd rather have kids walk through a storm to get there and have 1000's of teachers on the road in 50 mph winds. He's a useless jerk.
He's an idiot. Everyone was pissed about evacuations last time, but now when there SHOULD be evacuation he's not doing it. There are supposed to be 10-20 ft waves on top of the storm surge. That's effing nuts to not order evacuations. Hopefully he will change his tune as it gets closer. He should be closing schools on Monday. No one needs to be driving and stuck at work on Monday.

I live in the city, and do get a sense that people aren't preparing as much as they did for Irene. Not me though. We just went out and bought flashlights, lanterns and water. Also duct tape since we live in a high rise. I'd much rather be safe than sorry!
We live in the city too and people seem a little lax. We just stocked up on groceries which we needed to do anyway (just added a few more gallons of water) and we will be removing all items from our balcony and duct taping our windows as we did for Irene. I rather be safe then sorry.

It's crazy SweetApril.
I don't want to be closed on Monday. I think that would be wasteful. But I would bet that he doesn't close at all That's the problem. A few flurries or some rain is one thing but he has a record of NEVER closing. I drove through major snow storms to go to work because he always says "Stay off the roads. Let them be clear for emergency service vehicles. But NYC public schools are open."
He's seriously delusional.
Maybe every teacher should call in sick the day before and he will have no choice but to close!! Bottom line is how can children, living in a city , be expected to WALK to school during a hurricane???

I think it depends on where you live. For us, we werent hit too hard for Irene but we bought food last night in case we lose power. We already have flashlights, all our meds, supplies etc. So I'm not sure what else we can do.
Same here... our lights didn't even flicker last time and I went crazy looking for lanterns, batteries, stocking up on food and CASES of water and I even filled the tub with water which I still don't understand the purpose of! So we still have the flashlights, batteries etc. We did our regular food shopping this week and also bought a case of water. We put the lawn furniture away but it was time to do that anyway. The dogs have food and we'll probably take our pumpkins/hay/mums off of our front steps but other than that we're not doing anything.
I don't really know what else we could do anyway... we live north of the Southern State so we're not any where near an evacuation zone and even if we did have to leave the area all of our family lives further south than we do and lord knows it would take FOREVER to get off the island.
I bet there are plenty of people who will do much less than they did last time around.

My mom who is NYC DOE employee but is currently out on disability, keeps getting calls to report! Check your list asshats, she isn't working right now! God I can't stand Bloomie

Re: Do you think people will under-prepare for Sandy bc many thought Irene was a "let down" ?
Irene didn't let me down. I was scared, we layed in our hallway since we have loads of trees around our home and huge windows. In the dark of the night, we heard thumps of trees falling and wind whipping. Pretty scary, thankfully only our driveway got blocked. I am afraid for this storm just the same.
Hearing thumps of trees going down in the pitch black of night is frightening.

Irene a let down? It def depends on where you live!! We live on a canal and were flooded terribly between the rise of the canal and seepage. It is a tremendous mess that we had to clean for days. We are already preparing for this nightmare to come. I really wish I could have a " hurricane party" and drink all night, but instead I'll be a wreck and cleaning up my flooded basement

I don't know. I know I had a huge tree fall on my house and lost power for a day. My mom lost it for almost a week. So we are preparing for that again. I think people need to see death and houses being blown away to be impressed. We didn't have more damage because we prepared, IMO.
But how do you really 'prepare' for a tree falling on your house? The power going out- yes, you can buy batteries, flashlights, latterns, etc..canned goods, non perishables, etc
But I am more worried about a tree falling on my house or the roof ripping off...and I feel VERY powerless against that. And that is what worries me more.
I can do without bread milk, etc-,and all the crap that eveyrone is cleaning off the shelves right now. I can do without power as much as that stinks. But how do we prepare for somethign worse. That is where I am stumped and uneasy right now....
You are right you can't. We did bring the family into our bed since there are no trees over our room. I didn't feel safe letting Liam sleep in another room. If something happened I wanted to be right next to him. Some people sleep in hallways or the basement. So I guess that's how you prepare. You can't prevent it but, you can try your best to make sure you aren't hurt if it does.

Re: Do you think people will under-prepare for Sandy bc many thought Irene was a "let down" ?
Granted it was under Giuliani, but NYC did close schools during TS Floyd in 99.
We have prepared our yard - secured outside items, cleaned gutters, checked pumps, etc. Inside we are always prepared.
You can prepare for falling trees, by not letting them fall. Earlier in the week they suggested that you check any trees for dead branched or disease that might fall.

The problem for US is not our trees.. our elderly neighbor has a HUGE tree that is obviously very diseased and I'm shocked it hasn't collapsed yet. Depending on how it falls.. it would hit my fence & pool or my bedroom. So.. we're setting up camping in the living room. At least if the tree DOES fall, we will hopefully be outside of it's path.

Re: Do you think people will under-prepare for Sandy bc many thought Irene was a "let down" ?
Craig Allan posted this on FB:
"I doubt I will be able to be on line much today; double duty. And I doubt I will have electricity beyond tomorrow. Yes, I have a brand new generator hooked up to the panel but it won't mean a thing since I am in a manadatory evacuation neig hborhood. I admit it; I'm frightened. I had all the confidence in the world with Irene and stayed to see the devastating flooding but was unscathed. I have never seen the likes of this and have no mental image to go on as to what it could be like; I will get the family out after observing what Monday morning's high tide is like. This area has NEVER BEEN THROUGH ANYTHING like this. That includes the 1938 LI Express and the perfect storm. NEVER has a hurricane moved west towards LI/NYC/NJ. Listen to public officials except the stupid know-it-all ones. Don't be fooled by the utter nonsense of the NHC stopping official warnings from them because of technicalities in the storm. Sandy is still a hurricane and already intensified more- down to 28.08 inches. Still a central core of thunderstorms firing up while over the Gulf Stream. Yes, that will stop instantly once the westbound bend begins and puts her in 60° ocean waters. However, the baroclinic process could possibly keep her as intense as a Cat 1 with gusts to Cat 2. Everything you are reading about major inundation from record tidal flooding, river flooding and power outages lasting a week or more may come true. The Hudson and Delaware R will likely flood from ocean water backed up. LI Sound will see record tidal piling on its west end inundating parts of the boros too. The Battery will be submerged and as you know all mass transit stops at 7pm. Ocean waves may approach 30 feet !!!!!! 5-10 footers on LI Sound. From my colleague Joe Rao: This is about as BAD a scenario as you can ever imagine; a storm packing sustained winds of 70-80 m.p.h. moving straight west from the ocean and whose landfall coincides with high tide and on the night of a Full Moon. From the way it looks right now, the date of October 29, 2012 will certainly go down in the historical weather annals; forensic meteorologists will be writing technical papers about this for years to come. I only pray that we all come out of this safe and sound. I agree Joe."
I'm okay with going a little overboard. If nothing happens, I'll be relieved and happy.

Right. We all slept in our hallway since every window is huge and trees around all of them. Overkill? Not if a tree would have fallen on our house.

for those who say "well Irene was a let down" ... well this is not Irene with thesame exact track guaranteed .... we don't know until it gets here...
I did know people who lost power.
eta- same as PP, we'd be sleeping in living room, to avoid the neighbors large trees that overhang our bedrooms.

I was misplaced from my home for 3 weeks due to Irene. We were not even zone A and we left before the storm arrived. Took personal belongings and electronics. Sand bagged all our doorways and still got slammed. 2-3ft of water in my apartment. You just never know!
I just moved from there July 1st and had I not, I would have lost everything because my old neighborhood got destroyed. For Sandy, I was prepared. I don't take things like this lightly.
