I think it is different with each person.
I was teased for wearing fake keds (did not have the money)
Now it seems silly to me, but back then I was so embarassed. But then again, I don't own any generic shoes now, so maybe it did stick with me.
Don't worry Janice you weren't the only one, my mom actually made me wear Pathmark sneakers in grade school one year. I thought my life was over. Mortified... but I got through it! 
(honestly they were kind of dangerous with these hard rubber bottoms so I would slip all over the gym floor. had she bought me a smooth pair of Puma's I would have been a better athlete! LMAO!)
Now 2005: My son wears the best shoes I can afford, you don't mess with your feet! Even if he outgrows them in 8 weeks!

I moved to TN in 8th grade. The summer before my freshman yr. in HS my older brother was killed in a car accident. My friends distanced themselves from me because I was a bit of a mess. 10 yrs later my younger brother was killed in a car accident. I know that these events have effected the way I live my life. In some ways, it has made me more appreciative of my loved ones and my time here on Earth. On the other hand I always feel that people might leave me which interferes with my forming close friendships with people.

Absolutely. Even those two examples you gave, Ro, of yes and no are both actually yeses because whether the effect was good or bad, it still affected you through into your adult life.

Definitely. When I was a kid my bf would always make fun of my arms, telling me they were like man arms because they were muscular. To this day I think I have the horrible arms and now she tells me it was because she was jealous  Now, they aren't as toned but people always asked me if I worked out, never did but was always self conscious about them.

I must say in HS that I was part of a the "cool" click but I never had any boys like me. I never could figure out what was wrong with me....and constantly tried to make myself prettier. If that makes sense.
Now I occassionally see some of the "hot girls" in HS and the guys and can not for the life of me figure out what i was thinking. It makes no sense to me why some girls were like adored and others were not.
In the end it made me work harder in my apperance but i never changed the person i was.
This is why i refuse to go to any HS reunions. I feel like they are get togethers to rip people apart on what is wrong with them. I am VERY happy where i am and who i am now!
ETA - As for family things in my childhood...definately. My family life was so screwed up that I am afraid i will try to give my future children everything and they will become brats...

I definitely think they can, depending on how serious the events were. My first serious bf was abusive. I was young (7th grade), thought I was in love, and had no clue what damage he was doing. It definitely had a big impact on the rest of my life.

First Heidi many you poor girl for having to go through all of that and I'm sure there are days you still go through it.
Yes I defintely think it affects you later on I know for me it has and still does I see it all the time. Above and beyond any kind of teasing and being hurt by curel kids my worst enemy was my father now I haven't spoken one word to him in 7 years the longest time I have ever went without talking to him. Part of my feels free the other part is still so mad at him and wants to tell him off. The wierdest part we live about 3-5 miles from each and never ever run into each other (thank god). (sorry for the long vent).

I feel the same way...I'm not trying to blame anyone, but I definitely have a lot of issues because of my childhood and the way I was brought up.

I'd have to say yes. I lived in the shadow of a blond haired, blue eyed, buxom cheerleadering twin sister. It took a long time for me not to feel like someone's shadow.
Strange thing was that I didn't realize until much later that I was more popular in HS than I realized - and it didn't have anything to do with her - it was me they liked

I think it all depends on what happened. I think that you can allow yourself to be affected and use it as an excuse. And this seems to be the case a lot of times. But let's say you had a traumatic incident such as being molested or raped or in a horrible accident, I think those things can supress themselves and re-surface as an adult.

I was very shy and sensitive as a kid. Of course I was picked on bc I was an easy target. I think this still affects me today in terms of insecurity!

I think every childhood experience shapes you into the adult you are - the good and the bad. We are a creation of our experiences. Some issues have been dealt wiht and make us stronger, some issues have not and haunt us today. JMO.

Yes yes yes - I def have baggage from when I was younger. I have a lot of insecurities and have huge fear of failure that stops me from doing a lot of things in my life. Its a battle everyday for me.
