Re: Do you think there are any blue-collar workers who...
my uncle is a retired NYC cop
who paid off his mortgage in 10 years
is sending his daughter to Pace next year- paying cash
and could be retired and living it up- but chooses to work another job driving a shool bus - which got him in the teamsters union - working on pension #2
he is very smart with $$$- and he also has a college education as well- in accounting
he takes thifty to a new level - but he never has to worry about $$$$

NYC/LI area union members.
I totally DISagree with this statement. Unless they are the owners of a company that hire the union guys, the actual union guy showing up to work everyday, is not a millionaire. My father was probably one of the most respected carpenters in Union 608 in the city and him and my mom busted their asses to raise us. he took every job that came his way and worked a lot of overtime. yes, they owned their own home on LI, but nothing to excess and my mom cleaned houses and other things to help out. they were immigrants that started with nothing and although the union gave my parents and us kids growing up good health insurance and a pension for my dad, the salary is not that crazy. SO much is taken out of it. yes, they may make $40-50 an hour, but they do not see anywhere near that. so much is taken out for their benefits, taxes, union dues, etc. also, when you don't work a certain amount of hours in a quarter, you can lose your health coverage and benefits and anyone who is in a union for things like carpentry or electricians, etc. know that it's feast or famine. you either work a lot or can be unemployed for weeks at a time. My brother and BIL are in the union now and with the recession are out of work and barely making it. my parents, even with my dad's pension (which is not big considering he was in the union for almost 40 years) are worried about being able to afford to stay on LI.
unless he owns a huge contractoring company (that does well) i have yet to meet a union member (non-owner) making millions, no matter how much they work. it just doesn't happen.

This is totally my dad. People wonder how he does so well on a retired NYC cops pension... but he is very smart with money and investments as well...
