Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
I have heard that girls are more verbally adept at an earlier age while boys are more physically inclined. Has this been your experience? Just curious
Edited for typo in the subject line
LIF it sucks that you can't add a poll after you've posted. I'm just sayin

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
I have 2 girls so I can't compare my own kids. But I have 5 friends all with boys (my girls are the only girls in our playgroup) and my girls talk WAY more than any of them. My youngest DD was the youngest in the group and she could talk better at 14 months than even the oldest boy who was a full year older than her. So based on the 5 toddler boys I know vs. my 2 and 3 year old girls they talk better/way more.
I forgot to add that my girls also did their physical milestones early though, not just talking. Kaitee walked at 9 months and Brooke walked at 10 months. Talking early didn't slow them down.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
not with my two. Ella pretty much did everything (rolling/crawling/walking) earlier than Erk. I'd say they've been fairly equal verbally, but we'll see how that develops - Ella's vocab exploded around 18mths, and Erik is 18mths today.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
Not sure yet what it will be for my DD (she is only almost 4 months old) but I know that myself I was VERY verbal very early on but I didn't walk till 18 months old, so I guess it was true for me

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
I don't think it is true for my DC. Both are pretty verbal, DD has said "dog" but thats about it. DS started moving first - army crawling. DD would just roll around the floor. Then one day DD started crawling - hands and knees crawling. Then DS pulled up to standing. Pretty much within days DD started pulling up to her knees, and then standing.
Now, DD crawls like a maniac, stands everywhere and has started cruising. DD is still army crawling, cannot pull himself up to standing on everything and is not cruising yet. (although probably will be within days).
So far they have been within days/weeks of each other in terms of physical abilities. We'll see what happens with speech.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
it is definitely true for my son.
he has amazing fine and gross motor skills for his age (almost 17 months) but doesn't speak more than babbling.
his 10 month old girl cousin is saying mama but is just learning to crawl while DS was long crawling by that age and cruising around the house.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
My DD is 5. She spoke early, about 9 months. She had a ton of words. But, she didn't crawl till 13 months and she didn't walk till 15 months.
I expected DS (14 months) to be a slower talker and about the same as DD with walking and talking.
He started crawling at about 9 months, and at about 13 1/2 months he was off running. I was surprised that he spoke well at about 9 months also. He has new words everyday. Today at the mall, I told him we were going to see Santa, so all morning, he kept saying "Santa, hoo, hoo hoo." It was a different story when they met though! He can say the names of most animals and knows all of their sounds. He also recognizes the colors blue and red. When my DH was dressing him after the bath last week, he was trying to break free and looked right at DH and said "Get off me." Thanks to DD....
But anyway, I am surprised at how verbal he is. I am also surprised at how active, busy and into EVERYTHING he is. The climbing also....I was not prepared for that.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
It's been absolutely true of my kids. DD said her first word- cat- around 7.5 months. She started sitting at 6 months, crawling forward at 8 months, pulling up around 8.5 months & walking at 10 months. By the time she was 18 months or so she was full out talking in sentences & having conversations.
DS has been sitting since 4.5 months, started crawling at 5.5 months, pulling up around 6 months. He is 7.5 months now & the only "words" he says are "baba" & "mama"

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
My first son started speaking very early in full sentences - and honestly (although he tries) really never has been all that physical.
My younger son spoke later but is extremely strong, agile and is a force to be reckoned with relevant to any kind of sporting activity!

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
Charlotte is definitely very verbal...she is also pretty daring - was climbing before she was walking - so I'd say she's a good combo of both 'stereotypes'

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
ds#1 started walking at 11 months, and until about 17 months, only had a few words, but after that he started talking like crazy. He was also very sports inclined at a very young age.
ds#2, started walking at 10 months, very sports inclined, but is talking alot at only 12 months.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
Personally I don't think so, but I can only base this on my experience. DS started talking at 10mos old and his vocabulary just took off. He was saying 30 words or so by the age of 1. My neice who is a few weeks older than him didn't talk til much later. Infact at 20mos they were going to get her an eval, but a few months later she started talking more.
Eta:they were pretty even with the physical milestones. Now at 3 1/2 she is much more dramatic and he is more physical, but they are pretty equal as far as ability on both areas.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
Hmmmm...good question. I have heard the same but I don't know where my DS lands.
He was pulling up at an early age...so much so that the daycare asked me to put shoes on him and the ped agreed after seeing him. He was so moblile and so determined that we all agreed that he's be better off if he had the rubber sole to help him.
On the other hand...anyone that knows my son or has seen him in action can tell you how verbal he is. Early on he had a very good, clear vocabulary and his ability for recall was and is somewhat impressive...not genius level or anything..just unexpected at times.
So I don't know but I do think that for the most part boys tend to be more physical...even with my own son I see that he can't sit still for long periods without getting into something.

Re: Do you think this is true-boy/girl related
DD is 3 and DS is 16 months.
They were both early with physical milestones. DD was an early talker. Only thing that stands true for us is that DS is a later talker at this age than DD was.
ETA when DD started walking at 10 1/2 months she was very careful - still is a careful child.
DS - when he started walking at 10 months he just took off running and hasn't stopped since. He is a lot more daring than she was/is.
