I was just discussing this with DH tonight. I don't want to sound like a scrooge or anything, but if he gets $20 from every house, he makes a small fortune!! Neither DH nor I get bonuses or tips at Christmas.
We're giving him a $10 Dunkin Donuts card.

we give our mailman $30, he walks up our steep, long driveway and he has been our mailman for 16 years.

Being a Federal employee, he/she is not allowed to accept any gift over $20 and is not allowed to accept any money. If he/she does and gets caught, they can be fired immediately.

oh well, my mailman deserves it and if he ever got caught I would tell the post office that I forced it on him

Like emilain, he has to walk up a long driveway and we get packages delivered quite often. Plus he goes out of his way to help me when he sees me in the post office.

We haven't but we're not in NY anymore so no one out here tips anyone for the holidays but I decided to because we have a really nice mail lady. They don't have to come to our house though. We live in a development with community mailboxes.
Anyway I got $15 to starbucks and made a tin of cookies to give to her. Same that our milkman got.
