DOE- having a summer baby
Does anyone know how maternity leave works if you have a baby in the summer. I know they give you 6 weeks paid using your own banked days, but let's say you have a baby on July 11, does the DOE consider that as you taking maternity leave even though you are not working those days anyway?

You're not using days, so it doesn't matter. I'm not really sure what you're asking, but my friend had a baby in July and returned to work the first day of school. She could have taken more time, but didn't need to. You can take FMLA for up to 12 weeks.

I want to know if it's still considered using days if you give birth at a time when you are not reporting to work, as in the Summer. A co-worker told me that they will take your banked days for maternity leave even in the Summer. That doesn't make sense to me, so I wanted to know if anyone here knows for sure or has experience with this.

Days off(breaks, holidays,weekends) are not taken from your bank. Just the days when school is in session and you are not there.

The six (or 8 weeks for c section) starts the day you deliver. You only lose days from your car for school days.
Ex: I had my da the middle of June. I lost 7 days from my CAR, but my six weeks was up in July. I returned the first day of school

I had a baby in July. Used 0 banked days, but as of Sept 8, I'm on FMLA... unpaid. My 8 weeks were up in the summer, so I can only file fmla

this is interesting. So ideally, being due in May would be perfect, so you can use your CAR, and then stay out all summer. Mid/end of August would be nice too, since you'd still be able to use CAR days in Sept
If only you could pick when to be due.. :) lol

Exactly! Lol! I delivered end of August and didn't return to work until mid November... I took 12 weeks... 6 of those were paid and used days in my bank and the other 6 weeks were unpaid.

Yep, there is certainly no telling when a baby will pop out. I'm just playing around with ideas in my head to see what I'm looking at in terms of maternity leave and summer pay. I would love to get the most "bang for my buck" so to speak.

I did find out that your FMLA however starts on the first day of school. I am currently on my FMLA leave- (gave birth August 25) which leaves me to come back December 2. It's almost as if you have two calendars going on- your 6 week paid leave and your FMLA leave (which may overlap). So if you gave birth July 1st or August 30th, your FMLA calendar started September 8th- first day of school. Hope that made sense!

that FMLA calendar is all unpaid though, right? So you're getting to stay out until December 2, but you're not getting paid for any of it
