Re: DOE Teachers!!!!!!!!!!!!
My union rep told us we don't have to go in until Sept 8. That is the same day as the children come. The stipulation is we are not allowed in the building til that day (Sept 8). The reason is we are not covered under school insurance until Sept 8. So the first day we can start setting up our rooms is the first day of school with the kids.
Another thing is that we have to pay 1.5% into our pension.
We have to vote on how we want our delegates to vote.
Holy macarol. What do we do?

We were told this, too! HOW IS THIS EVEN REASONABLE????
Come on in, grab a desk. Oh, you're 6? Suck it up...carry it over here. Oh and I need some strong kids to move this file cabinet and these 8 bookcases. Oh, you're 6? Too bad. And you're new to the school? Sorry, can't stop to show you where the bathroom is.

But, the question is, When do the kids start?
The same day we do WHAT!?!? That's ridiculous! We need at least one day before the kids come to find out what our program will be, what rooms we'll be in, get books & supplies into our rooms, and just get organized in general.... I can't imagine starting with the kids on the very first day back, that's crazy... they should push the kids' start date one day back (at least).

Re: DOE Teachers!!!!!!!!!!!! 6/25 Update at end
Just saw on Gotham Schools that the kids will be reporting on Wednesday, 9/9.
If you recall teachers only were coming back the Monday after the kids finished. Now the kids will be back as well. Wonder if they were cooking this deal all along... Still, I am glad to have the day to set up my room.

Re: DOE Teachers!!!!!!!!!!!! 6/25 Update at end
From the Chancellor’s announcement:
Teachers and other UFT members will return to school on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. The first day of school for students will be on the following day, Wednesday, September 9. This means teachers will have one day—rather than the two days that we previously had under their contract—to prepare for the start of classes with no students present. At the end of the school year, we will make up the one instructional day that students lose in September. Rather than ending the school year with a half day on Friday, June 25, 2010, students will have a full day on Friday and will return to school on Monday, June 28 for a half day. Teachers will be able to do any necessary clean up or other end-of-year activities during the second half of the day on the 28th.

Why not just have the kids go in on Brooklyn Queens Day? Oh wait...not all have off that day. Either way, parents are NOT going to like that monday deal.

I have a feeling turnout will be very low- I have kids who've already jetted off to the DR and other places for the summer.

Well, we still are, IMO. Since the kids won't be there we will probably have to sit in PD for at least part of Tuesday. Having us all come back for that day is silly- I bet NO LI schools will be doing that.

ALL LI public schools to my knowledge (my district is one) have to go back the Tuesday after Labor Day. We always go back then. In my district, we have to sit in district opening meetings, review IEPs, etc. We also use the time to set up our room, but most teachers i know go in on their own time before Labor Day to set up.

I must have been loopy from being tired- I meant that we would be the only ones going back in June for that stray Monday, which will be our last day. I have a feeling the rest of the NY metro area will be done by the Friday before.

Re: DOE Teachers!!!!!!!!!!!! 6/25 Update at end
As per an email:
am pleased to inform you that today we reached an agreement between the UFT and the City of New York that states that the Tuesday following Labor Day will be used “first and foremost for preparation of the classroom and for the arrival of students.” If time permits, the agreement states, the remainder of the day may be used for professional development. Classes will begin for students on Wednesday, Sept. 9.
As UFT President Randi Weingarten promised at Wednesday’s Delegate Assembly, we have continued to press our case with the city that classroom educators need preparation time on the first work day of the school year, which is now the Tuesday after Labor Day. This new agreement is the result of those efforts.
In the 2009-2010 school calendar as previously released, Friday, June 25, 2010 was a half day of instruction for students and a half day for year-end clerical tasks while the final workday of the school year, Monday, June 28, was a full day of professional development. Under the new agreement, students will have a full day of instruction on Friday, June 25 and early dismissal on the following Monday, with the remainder of that final day set aside for clerical tasks.
Election Day in November and the former Brooklyn-Queens Day in early June will continue to be full-day professional development days for classroom educators.
********************
Now why not just have the kids go in for election day (they don't vote anyway!) and get rid of BQ day???
