DOE teachers- how does extended day work in your school?
With regard to the number of kids and what you teach? Do you have more than 10?
I have about 8-9 kids who stayed regularly. A few of them are level 3s, so they don't need to stay, but want to. I was happy to let them. But yesterday, my principal came in and read the class the riot act, and now I am expected to work with my whole class (25 kids) and teach them math. I had been focusing on ELA because that is my subject.
I have attempted to do the math, and I have a lot of trouble with it. Now I'm expected to do it with the whole class. I'm really annoyed because I just don't think it's fair to the kids who need the most help, and I don't want to mess them up more because I don't know the subject (and I also don't have enough books.)
I doubt my chapter leader will be of help and I hate to make waves with my principal in case LIFO gets tossed. I didn't mean for this to get vent-y because I don't think I can do anything about it.

She can't make you work with your whole class! That is against the extended time rules.
At my school we are extended time 37.5 minutes M-Th after school. 9th and 10th graders are mandated to stay, but once they figure out that they don't get a grade for that time, they just leave!
I really don't like extended time!

The first year it was a disaster and nobody stayed (kids) so we voted and had our periods extended instead. The 37.5 minutes is built into our schedule. We have 45 minute periods M-F. Our day used to be 8:27-2:25. Now it is 8:12-2:39 5 days a week.

No one has more than the allotted amount of kids..how are they getting your whole class to stay when it's only supposed to be mandated kids? We have ATS folders for extended day and it's only supposed to be those kids...

That is what we wanted to do, but we are on a campus and the bell schedule needs to be standard for the whole campus!

Interesting! We are a campus as well. There are 2 other schools besides ours in the building. I guess they do it the same way? I don't know....they did come in after we started doing it this way.

Re: DOE teachers- how does extended day work in your school?
The school I just started at is weird
Monday - Wed - Fri 820-320 Tuesday 820-230/315 every other wk Thurs 820-230
We are on a campus but follow our own time schedule (We don't follow the bells of the school)
Would this mean I have an extended day?
Sorry to ask a question to your question...I'm trying to figure out this DOE stuff!

Re: DOE teachers- how does extended day work in your school?
My regular class is 24 kids. At 2:20, Monday through Thursday, 14 kids are picked up and dismissed for me. The other 10 stay until 2:57 and I chose what I want to teach them. I usually do reading Monday and Tuesday, math on Wednesday and games on Thursday (math or literacy related).
In some classrooms, there is a cluster teacher with the homeroom teacher, and those classes can have up to 20 students.
I am in a K to 5 school if that makes a difference.

We have extended day 8 to 8:37 1/2 Monday to Thursday
Jenn, Every NYC school has extended day as a part of our contract. Each school handles it slightly differently.

Re: DOE teachers- how does extended day work in your school?
we did an sbo vote at my school so we do 50 minutes after school tues, wed and thurs only. our bottom third students we mandated i think- teachers can have no more than 10 students in the class though. you cant have a full class for period 9- that should be grieved. you can however teach out of subject for that time. i teach esl for period 9. meanwhile, i am a math teacher...

Re: DOE teachers- how does extended day work in your school?
Thanks for the feedback everyone. I am going to tell my principal that he needs to assign another teacher to be with me if he wants all 25 of my kids there. I hear there are a good number of teachers in my school who do not work with kids in extended day.
With regard to the math, I am going to help them with their HW because they tell me they usually don't understand it but I should be able to muddle through it (I have asked the math teacher for help with concepts in the test prep books, and she tells me to look it up in the handbook. ) So HW it is!
