does a stove have to have a hood?
We are in the process of redoing the kitchen. WE are not getting an over the range microwave though but does the range have to have a hood? The wall that the stove is on is not an outside wall so where would it vent if we did?
Currently the stove has not been vented by the previous owners but they also had no cabinets above the stove. We will be putting cabinets above the stove.

For safety reasons, have a fan installed some way or another above the stove, under a cabinet, etc.

Re: does a stove have to have a hood?
I have a fan above my stove, however I know someone who had a decorative hood over her stove and never put the fan in! I NEVER use mine... I think you would be FINE without it (however I am not sure what "code" is)...

We don't have a fan over our stove either - just cabinets. Granted there is about 2+ feet in between stove top and cabinets. Plus the back door is right there if we need to vent the space. The old fan is next to the back door anyway - and we're planning on getting rid of it.

Re: does a stove have to have a hood?
I don't know if you HAVE to have a hood/fan. I have a microwave above my stove with a fan built in but it's not vented outside. The cabinets above my microwave get very grimy and I have to "goo-gone" them constantly. It's disgusting. I only use the fan occasionally though and that's only when I've nearly burnt something. I think you can live without it.

Our stove has a hood with a built in fan but we don't have it vented outside.

Re: does a stove have to have a hood?
the fans above a stove are not just to get rid of smoke or burnt smells. They also get rid of heat and grease. Its always better to have one. Some places require that all homes have them, so check the codes. If you can not vent outside you can look into a recirculating fan. They have filters and recirculate the air right back into the kitchen. Its the same idea as a microhood just without the microwave. They are much less effective than a vented hood but are better than nothing.
If you have any more questions let me know, I used to work in the kitchen industry.
