Does anyone do plaster or ceramics?

I used to do plaster as a kid, and I found a ceramic store. IS it a lot harder?

I need to do something to relax me!

I have done both. I like the look and versatility of ceramic much better but there's more steps, work and costs involved.

A real ceramic store will generally be selling greenware that needs to be cleaned (smoothing all the seams and the piece itself). Greenware is very fragile and can break, often beyond repair. Then it is painted and fired. The firing costs in my experience has been half the price of the greenware. Several days to a week later, the piece is ready to be glazed, which is just another paint process after which the piece is fired again, for a fee. Then voila - you have a beautiful hand painted piece of art to enjoy

There are some of those painted pottery type places like "Once Upon A Dish" in Garden City and the "Painted Pot" in Brooklyn, that does the cleaning process and handles the glazing & firing for you.

I found Rosemarie's ceramics. I love it there. I bought a piece that had already been cleaned and fired, so I can paint it like the plaster I had done as a kid.

My next piece I will get in the early stages and clean it. But I think I will also fire it first...I don't know how it is different. I am hoping they can teach me

ETA: io think the way you described you paint first, then glaze, adn the way I'm doing it it's fire, paint, then spray?

I use to do them many years ago when I was younger! I think its much easier and cheaper if you fire it just once then Paint and spray! I have to see if there is any ceramic stores near my house so I can start doing it again also! Since the Winteris almost here gives me something to do at night!!
