Re: Does anyone else find it baffling/somewhat irritating when a parent uses their kids picture for their FB profile pic?
I almost ALWAYS have a profile pic of DS. Once in a blue moon I have changed it to a family shot. I guess I don't really see my FB page as all about me. I have virtually no info except schools I attended (so that people I know could find me) and now my job thanks to a coworker adding it somehow I use FB to see peoples pics and keep in touch. I don't use me in my profile because I guess I mostly A) don't really like any pictures of myself and B) don't really think most people I am friends with want to see pics of me.
That being said, yeah, I guess when I look up someone I used to know and don't necessarily want to be "friends" with but just want to see what they look like now, yeah, I do hate when their pic isn't them. But I don't want people looking me up for that purpose.

Okay, I lied. I have one profile picture on my FB page that does not feature me in the photo, but I claim responsibility for it's creation.
This was when we had a sleep over with our little cousins at my house and we had a play-doh party. I made a play-doh worm.

You are quite masterful with the play doh. I bow to your prowess.

I am guilty of making my dog my profile pic. Is that the same?
My profile picture is usually my dog.

I once put up a picture of my neice and nephews and I cound not believe how many people said what cute kids i had....then i had to go on to explain that I do not have children and that started a whole other round of questions/comments....
So that is why I have a pic of myself and not one else on my FB page!

Re: Does anyone else find it baffling/somewhat irritating when a parent uses their kids picture for their FB profile pic?
I guess people are proud of their kids & want to show them off? I have no idea. Doesn't bother me much, although I don't think I'd do it personally. I do prefer a profile pic that has the actual person in it, Although my FB profile pic doesn't always have a person in it at all, sometimes instead I just use a picture I like.

It only bothers me b/c I'm dealing with IF and it kills me to see EVERYONE'S kids all the time. I know I'll feel differently when I have a child, but I also imagine that my profile pic will always include me as well.

I'll be honest (it's what I'm good at!) - I used to do that with my first child. Here is how I look at it -
I think it's because a lot of people's FB profiles are private these days, so whatever pic you DO post as your main pic has to be pretty spectacular.
I think there is a psychology behind it, even subconsciously.
With one simple pic, your main photo has to convey:
who you are, what you have, where you been, and/or what you've achieved
.....it will be seen by your friends on FB, ---->but more importantly<-----, it will be seen by the people you are NOT friends with.....former high school enemies, former flames, former friends, etc.
I see a lot of main profile pics be either kids (like you originally posted) or of a family unit, a group of friends, a sexy hot bod shot, a shot of someone traveling/doing something exotic, a pic of someone in front of or in a fancy car, or a wedding pic.
I guess it's a way of showing what you've achieved/accomplished to people who may not know fully what you're up to in life...whether it be losing weight & looking great, or having a lavish wedding. It's whatever you are probably currently most proud of.
Human nature, I guess. So I think that's why people post pics of their kid(s) as their main pic.
Plus, it's another way for a parent to show off just one more pic of their kid.
This. Many parents are proud of the fact that such a big part of their identity IS that they have devoted themselves to the care of another person that they created. And in my book, that's at least as much to be proud of as something someone made, a trip they planned, or work they did on their own body. I love when people feel comfortable enough to make their picture something that's so embematic of what gives their lives meaning--no matter what it is.

Re: Does anyone else find it baffling/somewhat irritating when a parent uses their kids picture for their FB profile pic?
I think its awesome for a parent or anyone for that matter to post a pic of a child.
I don't see why anyone would think it was annoying or weird and this is NOT b/c i have kids...
It has ZERO to do with losing ones identity. If anything, my boys have added so much to my life that they bring out the best side of me always.
Depending on mood/events in life etc I will change my profile pic. It can from a pic of just DH and I , a pic of both my kids, a pic of one of my kids etc..why not?? They make me insanely happy, my family loves them to death and love seeing new pics...
My friends who do not have kids whether by choice or going through IF or just haven't had kids yet post pics of their dogs, their nieces/nephews, significant others etc and I would never ever think twice.
A dear friend of mine who is childless by choice always puts a pic of her dog as her profile OR of her godson who she loves more than life. I never have though it was weird, profile pics can be whatever a person wants and it usually is something positive and something or someone that means a whole lot to them (if it isn't a pic of themselves).

To answer this...
In my opinion, a FB page is about that particular person, not their child or dog or what have you.
I totally get having a picture that's got both you and your child, dog, etc but, me, I just don't get it.
Ironically, I've posted pics of random things, celebs (when they had that doppelganger thing), etc. so I guess in a bizarre twist of fate, I baffle myself?! Eh, that's nothing new!!

True, but my son is a part of my life, just like where I work(ed), what school I attended, who my friends are and what my status is about.

I agree, but see no reason to have a picture of just your son as a profile picture. Have one of you and him, but just him? Doesn't make sense to me. He's not you, you're not him. Yes, he's part of you and you of him but that's different IMO.

I don't get that either...especially when someone posts a picture and the caption says something like "my baby" or "my little girl" when it's not even their child! It just confuses me

It doesn't have to make sense to you - its my FB page. Plus my son is friggin ADORABLE, more reason to show him off.
