Most convertible seats start at 5lbs, and are just as safe as the infant seats, so if the infant seat is too heavy, just switch to a convertible seat. You'll have to at some point anyway. Many infant seats are good to either 20 or 22lbs (some are higher), but that is a lot of weight to carry. I'm pretty strong, but a 20lb baby, and a 10-15lb carrier is a lot of weight!
Also, if DC is getting close to the weight limit, you don't want to have to weigh them every day to see if they hit the limit. Our carrier goes up to 22 lbs, but we switched at about 19lbs, just to be on the safe side (besides the 34lb weight on our arm issue.... )

I never wanted to keep him in the infant seat. I never had a snap and go or used the function on my stroller where it snapped right in. I always just took him out and put him in the carriage. He seemed happier being free to move around. I would use the infant seat in a shopping cart if I needed the cart, but otherwise I would take him out of it.
