does anyone elses baby hate belly time and is it really bad if we dont do it often?

My DD is 8 weeks old and hates belly time she has never liked it and still doesnt. I try to put her on her stomach and she maybe lasts a few mintues without crying. Me and DH will lay her on our chests sometime to get in some belly time but she usually starts crying with that too. As a result we rarely do it.

How bad is it that we dont? Will she have some type of development issue because of it!?

My DD hated it too.
She had great head and neck control but just did not like being on her belly.
I did what I could, but I didn't go crazy.
I had her sit in the Bumbo chair a lot - to keep her off her back for a while.
She turned out ok.

DS didn't like it until he was able to hold his head up for a good portion of time.

We stuck with it regardless because our ped told us it was good for him to get that upper body stregth.

Maybe you can try placing a toy in front of her that she can focus on. We used this a lot and DS looooved it (still does).

Try laying her on her boppy, she might like that. According to our ped, anything where she's on her tummy is good practice.

Good luck!

thanks, thats good to hear. I think she has great neck control already we will sit her on our lap and she holds her own head up without a problem. She has been able to for a few weeks now.

Someone gave me the bumbo chair and i have been waiting and wanting to use it just not sure when i can. I was going to ask the dr next week at her appointment if he thinks i can start using it.

You can use the Bumbo chair as soon as she can hold her own head up.
My DD was in it from like 1 month old.
Give it a shot. It's awesome!

Both of my kids hated tummy time. Instead, I would lay on the couch propped up and put them on my chest on their belly. They'd pick their heads up to look at me, and they were none the wiser that they were actually doing tummy time.

Even if she sleeps on you, on her belly, I consider it tummy time.

Any tummy time is good, even for a minute. Don't worry!!

My DD hated it too. I didn't stress over it. She had good neck control from a pretty early age and we put her in the Bumbo as soo as she was old enough. I was more worried about her head being flat, so as long as she wasn't on her back too much I wasn't worried.

Same here.

My DD is 6 months and HATES tummy time. I didn't even really bother with it.

My pediatrician said not to worry about it as long as she is not always on her back.

DS HATED tummy time..which is ironic now that he likes to sleep on his belly...LOL.

He had great neck control early on and we usaed the BUMBO as soon as we could. I kep trying tummy time but he just didn't like to stay on his belly. I also would lay him on his side and that how he started to roll so sometimes he would end up on his belly and that would give him some tummy time. We didn't go too crazy...he just didn't like it, but still had great neck contro.

Good luck!

all i can say is that we didnt really do tummy time because our little guy hated it, and he was a little delayed with other things-

definitely do tummy time, even if your little one hates it!

DD hates it too, but we do it anyway. We tried mirrors, distracting her with toys and music, and putting her on our chests. At best, she'll go for five minutes w/o screaming. It's hard to hear, but I'm learning to deal with it. This is the first of many things that I'll make her do for her own good that makes her cry.

I wonder.. do any babies LIKE tummy time? It's so much work and so tough, I can't imagine there are a lot of babies that love it.

Anyway, yes. it's important.. even if you do it a few times a day for a minute or two each time you're helping your DC.

Re: does anyone elses baby hate belly time and is it really bad if we dont do it often?

I did very little tummy time with DS at that age and if I could go back I'd force him to do it more. He wasn't really delayed but it did take him a bit longer than most to push up. Plus we dealt with flat head issues from 2 months till now (almost 8mths) and his head is still not quite round. Tummy time is just so helpful for so many reasons. Instead of doing longer stretches of time I would just put her down for short stretches more frequently at first. Plus get her used to being on her tummy on your chest. The more you push it now the better it'll be later. JMO I know it is hard to hear them cry.

ETA: propping her up on boppy will help if she is big enough and laying down next to or across from her might help too

DD is only 7 weeks, but she actually does like tummy time (or seems to) -- at least for the first 5 minutes or so. The most she's ever been on her tummy consecutively is about 15 minutes. She used to like to sleep on DH while on her tummy but not as much anymore. She can't be too tired, though, or she gets really really cranky during tummy time! She likes it better on a blanket than on the boppy.

But we just got her a bumbo yesterday ($20 on Craig's List - with the tray! yay!) and she already LOVES it! I was so unsure about buying one before because they seemed like a silly, expensive idea to me, but she really loves it!

I just figure, do whatever works. Don't torture your child, though. If he/she is miserable, I wouldn't keep him/her on the tummy just because. A happy baby always seems more important to me than anything else.

I agree. Many babies are not fond of tummy time but it is so important. I would do lots of short intervals, a few minutes at a time multiple times a day. Try putting toys out, mirrors and other fun stuff the baby likes to look at.

DS hated it!! I mean HATED it!!! Screamed and cried for the first few months of his life when I would put him on his tummy. And he never really tried to roll over cuz he was too busy crying.
So we played with him on his tummy on our tummies and that was the extent of it.
He is now a completely healthy, extremely active 19 month old.

OMG DS HATTTTES IT!

We ry to trick him and have him lay on our chests but he eventually figures it out and screams. If we try a mat he screams so hard that he gave himself a nose bleed! Chat Icon

What I have been doing is I sit on the couch near the arm (we have a big cushy one) I lay him on me and over the arm. Like a prop up pillow and i have nick jr one and he pulls his head up to see the tv. He loves smurfs too LOL!

So this morning he did tummy time and watched the smurfs for 12 minutes. That has been the longest he has done.

I know how you feel!

My Dr. keeps saying to me tummy tummy tummy time he needs!! The are nervous about his neck tilting and they said the tummy time for him is more so that he stretches his neck back.

Re: does anyone elses baby hate belly time and is it really bad if we dont do it often?

Sean hated it at first b/c it's a workout for them - but that is the whole point.

I was the mean parent that made him suck it up and deal -

IMO, is it going to kill them NOT to be on their belly? No, of course not - but as far as I was concerned there was a reason my Ped told me to have him on his belly as long as he was awake - it is GOOD for them -

My DS was not a fan of it, although, I blame the colic and AR in his case.

However, DS had great neck support by his 1 month well visit...even the ped was amazed at how well he held his head. So I rarely did it.
