Does anyone go to counseling? By yourself or with your so?
We're in the extreme fast forward version of things with DS. From starting his EI services to getting an ASD diagnosis and starting ABA all within 45 days. My head is spinning. I'm lucky enough to have a group that DS and I go to now on Tuesdays that is playgroup for DS and support group for me but I feel like I need to talk to someone about how to keep my life together..
Next to every statistic about the amoung of children with Autism in the US is the scary statistic about the failure rate in marriage among these families. I don't want to be in there. I need to find some way to make heads or tails of all of this and not be a mess all the time.
Anyone else go see a therapist on a regular basis to talk about all of this?

I used to see a therapist because of the overwhelming sense that I did something wrong and that's why DD has an ASD. I blamed myself because obviously, being the one pregnant with her, it must be my fault. Most people scoff at that but until you've lived it, you won't understand. Once we started parent training with a trained psychologist at my DD's former preschool, I would discuss these emotions there with my DH. For me, the autism diagnosis has brought us together as a family. We make decisions together and are very involved in her therapies, social skills training, etc. It's a whirlwind of emotions you're going through but I can promise you that with time, this will get easier!

I used to get a social worker 1x per week while in EI.
I used her as my shrink honestly. She kept me sane. Let me talk! DH was not about "support group" with others. So that worked for me! I really needed to vent sometimes. She was my sounding board.
I do belong to a support group at DS' school now. We meet 1x per month. The mediator is the SW of the school.

I think therapy is great. I would love to go just to vent to a neutral party and get some prespective on what is going on. I really have no time to go but I wish I did!!!
