Does anyone have a job they didn't need specific schooling or experience for?
I've been teaching the last five years and was laid off this year due to low enrollment (I worked in a Catholic school) and seniority. I feel like this is my opportunity to try something new and difference since I haven't been truly happy with teaching since I started.
My problem is I have NO idea WHAT I can do. I don't mind getting into the business world but so many people want experience or some kind of formal education.
Does anyone have a job or know of a job that you can go in basically at entry level and be trained for the position? Or if someone knows of something in the education field other than actually being in a classroom.... Also something with decent pay (still have to make a living!)
I would really prefer to stay on Long Island if possible. Thanks for your help!

Re: Does anyone have a job they didn't need specific schooling or experience for?
i work in a college in administration, and did not need a specific degree for my first job there (I am now working on my doctorate in a more specific area). Most of the jobs require a bachelor's/master's. i enjoy it. i taught a few college classes and generally don't like students too much, so this is a nice balance for me, in academia but not dealing too often with students.
I also worked at Morgan Stanley on the trading floor when I first graduated from college with an unrelated bachelor's degree. Hated that, but I guess some people like it well enough.

I work in college administration as well, and love it. There are a lot of options. You might want to consider speaking with a career counselor about your transferable skills, and possible taking a career assessment. Often you can utilize your school's career services for free or discounted rates. FM if you have questions. I am a career counselor at a local university.

Any entry level job in HR does not usually need specific training for and you usually can work your way up. They are hard to get into though.
Also, you might want to try being an executive assistant at a big company. Usually you can get promoted from within.
Also, working in Upper Education might as a secretary might let you go back to school for another field.

Re: Does anyone have a job they didn't need specific schooling or experience for?
I entered my field with no experience. I rec'd the training I need at work and then moved on and took classes & got licensed (Company paid for).
Starting out with no experience is pretty basic, but as you prove yourself, get licensed and learn more the money is definitely there....it all depends on how far you want to go in the industry.
I personally want out, but can't seem to find anything that I want to do or the things that I consider pays a lot less...too much less.
Good luck.

I graduated college and went in to social work. I worked within social work for a few years and got burnt out pretty quickly. I moved from social work to finance without any experience whatsoever. I worked at a entry level job to get some background and licensing and worked from there. SInce then, I'm fully licensed, earned a master's and became a CFP.

Have you tried educational book publishers? I've heard of people who have left teaching and gone into editing/reviewing, etc.
Best of luck!

How about an administrative position at a test prep or tutoring center? I was looking into this. They have good benefits and it tends to be a fulfilling job. Good Luck with whatever you decide!

I work for a test prep center. I started out in Operations, didn't need any experience and now I work in Marketing. They trained me to do marketing, my degree is in Political Science. It's a great way to be involved in education, without being in the classroom.

I work at Kaplan. Unfortunely, we don't have any positions open in the Long Island Center at this time. There are always positions open at other centers though. We have centers in Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and 2 centers in Manhattan. Our corporate offices are in Manhattan and they have a lot of workers there. We post everything on Career Builder. Good luck!

Try Princeton Review and i think SCORE! Centers are hiring.
Also, look again in September because in my experinece a lot of the reason people leave these jobs is to go to grad school, so there are usually vacancies in Aug-Sept.

That is totally true. We always used to have 4-5 full time positions open around the end of the summer. This year, no one is leaving, which is unusual.
Score might be a good fit for you. They work with the elementary students. Their website is www.escore.com. They are also a Washington Post owned company, like Kaplan is.

What about Adult education...specifically training or instructional design. With a degree in psychology i taught for two years and then started out as a training specialist and then became an instructional designer. I most currenlty do organizational developement for a software company and really love it!
FM if you want more info.

I looked at Score but I ende dup cancelling my interview, because I got sick, but ultimately it wasn't for me. I think I prefer working with adolescents/adults. i was surprised and disappinted that there's not much open at kaplan anywhere. I applied for a job at premier in cooper sq but it had been filled by the time I applied. I'm going back to tutoring again

Re: Does anyone have a job they didn't need specific schooling or experience for?
I work as a recruiter. I had no exp. or training in this field and was hired on the spot. In 9 mths I have increased my salary by $8k per year and I have offers from other company's that want me all the time. It's great field for advancement but there is a ceiling you can hit and it'd not for everyone.
If I ever get burnt out I'll prob. go into HR for a large corp.

Congrats! I did the phone interview and I got called in for a group interview. It seems cool. I never rescheduled it. I think it's a good job with a lot of room for growth. GL!
