OMG - I am in tears right now. I don't have any experience with seizures but can't imagine how terrifying and heartbreaking that must have been.

I ask because this way you know when to do something a little more drastic to get the fever down fast (like a bath) if it ever comes close to getting that high again.
You never want to get the fever down too quickly because dorpping a body tempertature too fast can also cause some problems. ROtating with tylenonl and motrin and getting babies naked with cool damp towels under their armpits, groin and back of neck are some of the safest ways to get the temp down quickly but safely.
Really? I was always told a tepid (not too warm, not cold) bath was a safe way to bring down a fever. Is that not a safe thing to do?

The best way to do it is slowly. Take all of their clothes off and wait 5-10 minutes and then start the bath and slowly make it cooler.
Actually just getting them naked and putting cool towels in the axilla(under the armpits, groin and neck) works great! This is what we always did in the ambulance and the ER with kids!
The main thought is not to do anything too quickly...fever spikes are dangerous and well as the fever dropping suddenly..it is too much for hte body to handle. Slow and steady wins the race

Re: does anyone have experience with febrile seizures?
My son had a febrile seizure last May. It happened while he was in day care. I was on maternity leave with Lucy, who was only 2 weeks old at the time and DH was working from home. They called us petrified and said that we need to pick him up right away. The teachers were absolutely petrified! He moaned and fell off a chair he was sitting on with his eyes rolled back and foam around his mouth. One of the teacher's Dh was epileptic so she assumed that that's what was happening. He came to his senses in about 3 minutes and was very weak and sleepy for the next few hours. That phone call from his day care was probably the scariest phone call I ever received. Especially because they kept on saying it was epilepsy which terrified me even more!
We took him to the a pediatric neurologist who confirmed that it was in fact a febrile seizure and not at all epilepsy. I did a lot of ready on eh subject and discovered that those are actually very common in kids 1 to 5 years of age. The cause is always a rapid temprature rise. The doctor told us that while the seizure might repeat the chances of it a slim. It is important to make sure that at the slightest sight of fever it is immediately brought down and that he in never overheated i.e. overdressed etc!
Fullersbride gave a very good description of what to do in a case of another attack.
When I think of my baby sitting in day care in pain with his fever rising and passing out like that my heart bleeds and I am in pain just thinking that I wasn;t there for him. On the other hand, I am somewhat glad I never saw it happen. I think it gives me a chance to be prepared should it ever repeat ( may it never happen!!!) rather than freak out at the thought of what I already saw. I can only imagine how absolutely terrible it was for you to see your son in that condition. Please keep in mind that as everyone mentioned, those things are common in small children!
Feel free to FM me if you have any questions at all or just want to talk about it!!
P.S. Just wanted to give you this site as a reference: http://childbrain.com
It Dr. Rami Grossmann's site. He is the doctor who we went to who came highly recommened by our ped and many moms I spoke with.
