Re: Does anyone live in NYC know if?
I heard they are close to impossible to deal with. My friend has her son in Manhattan Country School now and before he was in some other city pre-school...FM if you want more info but yeah to get your child in is pretty hard anywhere, unless you know somebody.

Re: Does anyone live in NYC know if?
Oh yes. You must go to the right preschool so you can get into the right elementary school. Then the right high schcool. Plus a lot of 4 year olds have long commutes to get to their school.
This is why I don't live in NYC anymore--I didn't want to deal with all of this. I just wanted my baby to go to the neighborhood public school, same as I did.

Unfortunately not b/c in most families either Mom or Dad, if not both are highly prestigous figures in their give professions .......I watched my neighbors go through this when their son was starting - They went through 3 or 4 schools before finding the 'right' one - ONE reason I'm happy to have moved back to the 'burbs before this baby is born !!

Re: Does anyone live in NYC know if?
I had read that you are supposed to start calling at 7am the day after Labor Day just to get on the list for the lottery. Then you wait for a call back and interview time. The more people dialing on your behalf, the better chance at getting through.
My DH was asked this weekend by another parent at our daycare if we had started looking for a preschool. I'm totally not ready for this...

Re: Does anyone live in NYC know if?
It's crazy!!
One of the lawyers in my office had a SPREADSHEET that she sent around to I don't know how many family and friends to all dial for her yesterday.
I was dialing for her too - busy signal every time. Today she's got everyone dialing for the wait list for her nursery school of choice.
They only give out a certain number of applications and once they're done, they put you on a wait list.

Re: Does anyone live in NYC know if?
Yup. Two of the partners at DH's fund were going through it last year, we all had kids within 1 month of each other. It was a whole year process for them. Applications (including tax documents and statements from their investments), open houses, tours and interviews for the parents, interviews and tours for the kids....seemed unending to me. And they both make well over $1 million a year plus they get a sizeable ownership bonus that's re-invested into the fund so it's not like they can't afford the tuition.
Meanwhile out here on LI all I did was call around for appointments for tours, pick the school I liked the best and then fill out one application. No interviews or any of that nonsense.
