Does anyone plant flowers from seeds?

Do you start them inside?

Do they really grow?

I've done this so many times with my students (teacher) but they've never actually grown enough to flower and I don't know what we're doing wrong.

Any advice would be great!

this has been my experience as well! but they are always selling seeds everywhere each year --- it must work for some people!

i was speaking to a teacher who I know plants with her kids each kid today, and she made a suggestion...

to go out and buy flats of flowers and just put them in the kid's pots --- switch them with their seedlings over the weekend.

i totally don't want to do that! i want to have the real experience!

I'm trying sunflowers for the first time this year. So far, I have small stalks growing...we'll see if they ever develop flowers. I did start them inside in little Dixie cups. It was actually a "kit" I got at Lowes. It came with a "pellet" of soil that you had to wet and 3 sunflower seeds. In 1 cup I have 3 stalks, and in the other I only have 1.

My husband started sunflowers inside & a bunch of herbs...he's recently transplanted outside.

I planted lima beans w/ my kids in plastic baggies & they grew (almost out of the bag in 2 weeks). I also planted marigolds in pots w/ them & so far we have some sprouts & leaves...we'll see what happens by the end of this week or I'm going to do the flat thing as well.
