I have a seperate one because we were saving up for my maternity leave and wanted to put it in a different account. We use it now for taxes and insurance.
He has one because he had to transfer his 401K into an IRA. He recently opened another checking account for his paypal money. He has no other money saved though-lol!!

We both have seperate savings & checking and we also have a joint one.
There's no particular reason why...it just works out ok for both of us. We split bills like I pay some he pays others. The joint accounts have money in it that we rec'd from the wedding and pretty much act like it doesn't exist right now
This describes DH and I perfectly!! Exactly the same type of financial situation
