I keep hearing that the norm is to give china place settings in quantities of 2.

But, I'd be getting a free soup bowl with the purchase and I kind of wanted to keep my gift within a certain range...1 place setting is in that range.

So far, the person doesn't have any of the settings.

I don't think so. I got a lot of single settings. It all adds up.

I had gotten one place setting and have given one as gifts. They are expensive!

no way-- I got a lot of "single" placesettings... Well, not a lot as I only registered for 12-- but you get my point.

I got singles, and mine aren't even that expensive. Unfortunately I only have 4 place settings. I need to hit the Mikasa outlet.

Re: Does it seem weird to give 1 place setting of china as a gift?

At least two people at my recent shower gave me only 1 place setting of china each. I didn't think it was odd.

The only thing I did think was odd was that my FMIL gave me only one setting, signed it from herself AND her two grown daughters (who did not come to the shower or send their own gift, and both are in the bridal party).

However, one place setting of china is usually a pretty generous gift from one person!

I received most of mine as single place settings. Definitely not weird.

I never heard that you had to give 2 place settings. I received gifts of one place settings. I thought it was nice too.Chat Icon

I had a lot of people give me one place setting. Especially if they are expensive. I didn't think it was weird at all. I wouldn't expect 1 person to give me 2 place settings. That's a lot of money.

I got mostly single settings at a time. Why would you think it is weird? Unless you somehow registered settings in sets of two on your registry (impossible to do btw), then I would think it's weird.

Be grateful that you got anything at all! Chat Icon
