Megan's class has a rest time. I wasn't aware that in Kindergarten this still happened? Megan has not rested since she was 2 years old! She was doing great with going to school until today when she cried hysterically because she didn't want to "rest.' I understand if this is the policy and a part of the daily routine, she needs to get used to it, I don't think it's long..but wondering if this is standard in Kindergarten?

Yes, when DS was in kindergarten last year, when they came back from recess, they had to put their heads down on the desk or table, the teacher shut off the lights, put on soft music and they "rested" for 10 minutes every day. It calmed them down after running around at lunch and helped them focus on the afternoons lessons.

I think they do this the first few weeks of Kindergarten but not the entire year.

I think nap time in K is ridiculous. Most kids have grown out of a nap long before K.

I agree. By the last year of daycare/preschool, my kids rarely took naps.

Re: Does your DC's Kindergarten class have a rest time?

In Queens, same district 2 different schools had 2 different policies. My older DDs K class had rest time on their mats until 2/3 of the way through the year. My younger DDs school had NO rest time and said they haven't done it in years.

I thought she needed rest time, not that she napped at home, but she went to after-school til 530 and she was 4.9 when she started K. It's a really long day.

DD had rest time, where they had to have nap mats and they laid down on the floor. This year, DS has the same K teacher in the same school, but they now rest at their desks. I think it is b/c his class is huge!

No, they don't have rest time. I think they do yoga when they come in from recess, though. Just some deep breathing stuff to calm them for the afternoon.

Yes, not sure how long but DD said they put there heads down for a few minutes at their desk. She also told me one little girl falls asleep all the time - how sweet!

My son mentioned it for the first time yesterday. I knew they didn't have nap time, but they do have quiet time- which I think is a good thing.

Ok..I am LIVID! I agree with "down time" and I think they need it. I think a half hour TOPS for Kindergarten is acceptable but I found out last night that they "rest" for AN HOUR!!! I think that is just RIDICULOUS! It's Kindergarten! AND we pay A LOT of money for them to miss an entire hour of academics or even play (good for interaction) for them to rest. Megan got timeout 2 days in a row now because she was FIDGETING on her mat during rest time. REALLY???? I would fidget too. Time to speak up I guess.

Sounds like it's more of a break for the teachers than the kids. I would absolutely contact the teacher, because punishing someone who does not normally take a nap is INSANE!

Re: Does your DC's Kindergarten class have a rest time?

I know our district had nap time for both our boys.. and I thought it was great. If they didn't want to nap they just got to wind down and relax or read quietly. It's only about 30 minutes but it gives them time to settle down after recess and lunch. They don't have nap time for the grades my kids are in now but they DO still have quiet time - 30 minutes to read or write.

Yes, they did in PreK and K and I think it was about 30 minutes. 60 minutes seems crazy especially because I would think most kids don't even nap at that age. I would totally speak to the teacher about it...

I had to send in a towel for rest time but I'm not sure how long it is.

Re: Does your DC's Kindergarten class have a rest time?

I'm not a parent yet, so I'm sorry to crash and I know that I don't have any leg to stand on, but I'm so surprised to read these responses. My elementary school had nap time through first grade, and I missed it after that. I still like taking naps to this day, as do many of my friends and colleagues. I think that the human body (like most animals') is designed for a long sleep at night and a short sleep during the day. That's where the siesta comes from, and long before that, the ancient Romans' "sexta".

If only our companies allowed us to take naps, we'd probably be more productive in the late afternoon. There's a reason Google, one of the most innovative and successful companies in the world, offers employees "napping pods".

So anyway, I'll get down off my Chat Icon now, but it does surprise me that so many parents would discourage a rest period, even if just for a short time. (I get that an hour might be extreme.)

It's different when it's an hour long as opposed to let's say 20 minutes. We are also talking about 5 year olds. Most of them gave up naps years ago. Of course there may be a handful who still nap, but most do not. My daughter can't stay still longer than 5 minutes..so for an hour rest, it is ridiculous. Also, this is private school where I pay a lot of money and an hour of her day is going to her getting hysterical because she has to rest for an hour. If we lived somewhere where we were used to slowing down during the day and taking cat naps, ok...but we don't. I get what you are saying..BUT..it is different when you are dealing with kids. You cannot dictate to them that they should NAP NOW when they become a certain age.

I didn't realize this was private school. I don't think they have to follow the same protocol as public school when it comes to things like this unfortunately. I would probably threaten to pull my child out though, because an hour is excessive, especially when you are paying for them to educate your child (in addition to paying taxes for your own district).
