Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

I have always leaned towards girl dogs, not sure why I guess force of habit. I wanted to know though, is there a real difference between the two (besides the obvious parts) - LOL. Behavior, loyalty, training, etc...?

Thanks & just curious Chat Icon

I have one of both. Both of their urine kills my grass.

I don't think there is a general boy vs girl difference.

My boy is very stubborn, and not submissive to us at all. My girl will crouch down and give belly if you give her the "look" or scold her.

But my boy is more sociable with other dogs and my girl is more aggressive with other dogs. Reverse of with us...so I am not sure if I can say for sure there are sex differences in general. I think each dog is different.

I prefer girl dogs. I find the male lifting of the leg weird. Although my little girl hoovers and lifts one leg slightly.

ETA: As long as the dog is fixed it probably doesn't matter.

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

Every dog has their own personality just like people whether they are male or female. The males will be a little larger than the females if you are looking for a specific breed though. Good luck!

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

i have a male and female dog and my female dog doesn't listen for sh*t. she cries and whines all of the time and doesn't seem as loyal as my male. i'm about to get another female though. we'll see how this works out.

I love when my boy dog lifts his leg. So cute, he lifts it so high, it's like he is exercising!

And my girl, after watching my boy, lifts both legs and pees mid air to aim on a tree. She has seriously picked up my boy dog's urination patterns and she even marks repeatedly during walks like he does.

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

When we were looking for a dog I was also set on getting a female but we ended up with a male. From what I research and spoke with a breeder...a female dog is usually there for themselves (example being stubborn, doing things on her own terms) and a male dog is there for you (meaning trying to please you, to make you happy).
I am sure it varies between breed but my parents have a female yorkie and we have a male shih tzu and I can see that type of a difference between them so far.

And my dogs are the exact opposite. My girl is stubborn and doesn't listen, while my boy is a very submissive cuddle bug. My girl loves to play with other dogs, but my boy gets nervous and runs away or barks.

I think you're best off trying to get to know the individual dog as best you can, and then making a decision based on its personality rather than its sex.

It is very adorable!!

She literally does a "handstand" with her two front legs and both back legs get lifted up and she pees mid air to aim on a tree. You know i love my dogs alot...I even think when they pee that it's cute.

What you said made me think of this.

My boy dog is obsessed with me, my girl dog with my DH.

My boy is a "momma's boy" and my girl is a "daddy's girl" for sure.

Very odd that they each prefer the opposite sex re us.

Mine are that way too - I've always wondered if it's because of pheremones or what.

mine are the same way.

my boy is more aggressive towards other people and dogs... my girl, she will lick anyone to death and would play with an ant if it'd let her.
my boy wants to please us, hates when we're angry with him and listens.
my girl could give a rat's rear what we say or do - she marches to the beat of her own drum.

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

i prefer females when it comes to dogs.

they say male dogs typically gravitate to women humans and vice versa. i have found this to be true.

it really depends on the dog, if its fixed or not, and teh breed. good luck

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

I have read up on this. I do not see a real difference other than personal preference. Statistically, male dogs are more likely to bite BUT the difference is not huge unless we are talking about an unneutered male dog. They are 3 times more likely to bite than any neutered dog and an unneutered male dog's bite is more likely to cause injury. That's the only scientific difference I know of.

I have a male dog who is very dominant. I previously had a male dog of the same breed who was very submissive. Growing up I had only female dogs because my mom didn't like the look of the peenie. Now I would say that gender does not matter to me.

Totally silly, but I don't like the look of a male dog's "area" Chat Icon That's one of the reasons we have a female.

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

I have two male dogs. They are definetly "mommy's boys". They both like to cuddle. One likes other dogs, the other does not. One is very friendly the other is not. They are actually very opposite when it comes to personality.

if you're friends dog is still doing that, then he's not trained well. my dog rarely ever has an accident. and if he does, it's my fault for not taking him out sooner.

a thing to think about housetraining, it's NEVER the dog's fault. it's the OWNERS fault for not paying close attention to the dogs signals.

the marking territory thing would be a stupid reason not to get a male dog. i love my male dog more than anything and if he's going to pee over a previous dog's spot, who cares

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

i've had both - the girl was definitely calmer than the boy, but who knows if that was a boy/girl thing or a breed thing (both were mutts)

Re: Dog ?? - Boy vs. Girl

I've had both from various breeds and I think the breed dictates behaviour and training more than gender, although particular breeds do have very strong differences between the genders.

I've been told in Havanese that boys are more affectionate. We have 2 boys and a girl and I do see that - though we got Bella at 6 and she was a puppy mill rescue so it's a whole other thing...
