Dog bit the neighbor
My dog bit my neighbor this weekend. My DH was outside walking him and the neighbor was petting the dog and all of a sudden he bit his hand. My DH is soooo angry at the dog and I can't help but feel sorry for the dog (and of course the neighbor). It's so out of character and my dog has never done this before. He did break skin and the neighbor was bleeding. He is a dog owner too and seemed to understand and didn't come across angry. I'm so embarassed and don't know what to do...

Re: Dog bit the neighbor
Has your dog ever showed signs of fear or aggression?I can relate. My dogs have bit people when afraid. One was a dog lover that we kept warning to not go near our dog b/c we didn't trust our dog. Dog owners are never fearful it seems. My dogs just bite in fear, never aggression. So I am cautious and don't let strangers pet them these days. I am sorry, it is upsetting but some dogs do this in fear. Do you think your dog was afraid?

^This first of all. Second, is your dog acting strange at all? Maybe he's not feeling well.
I know how it feels though, my dog got into a scuffle at the dog park a few years ago and I was so upset. Nobody was hurt, not even a tiny scratch but it was scary.

Dog bit the neighbor
Thank you both for your replies. Yes, my dog always seems to be scared and skittish. He is old now and as been getting a lot better with age. Halfbaked- it's funny you ask if he is feeling well. Over the weekend my DH and I noticed he wasn't feeling well. He's been shaking his ears a lot, sneezing non-stop, and almost threw up on Sunday. Last night I kept telling my DH to make a vet appointment too. UGH! My poor pup was probably scared AND not feeling well. Although, it's still no excuse for his bad behavior I do feel bad.
I feel even worse for the neighbor. I'm so embarssed to even see him now. I was going to leave a gift card or bottle of wine for him as an apology. Is that too much?

Re: Dog bit the neighbor
It sounds like that could be it. My dog is funny on the leash sometimes, too. He gets nervous. If he's off leash in the yard, he's an entirely different dog. All you can do is be more careful with him going forward. When people ask me if they can pet my dog I usually just say no, he's shy which works because if they reach out to pet him, he hides behind my legs. As for a gift, I probably would because I KNOW how guilty you must be feeling, even though it's not your fault! It's an accident, these things happen. Your dog is an animal first and foremost and it sounds like your neighbor understands this. It's a nice gesture though and I'm sure they'll appreciate it!

I would just speak to him and tell him you are taking your dog to the vet, that he has not been feeling well and you believe that iswhy this happened.
Honestly, that is probably why this did happen. My dogs have bit me when in pain or have gotten hurt. My female bit me when I had my DD and came home from the hospital and I was brushing her beard and caught a knot. She had never bitten me before that. But she was very stressed since I was not home for days and random people were in and out of our home. Also just recently in this hurricane, we had no power and my female flipped out. Attacked my male dog for no reason. She was clearly freezing and stressed.
I would just be honest and tell him you feel terrible but that you are taking your dog to find out why he has not been himself. I dont think I would give or send anything....hmmm, not sure about that.

I wouldn't be surprised if he did. My DH was walking him, so I wasn't there to confirm.
I was walking more to my DH after work and it looks like the dog got the neighbors finger.
Thank you all again for your advice. I am going to apologize again and hopefully just put it behind us and take the dog to the vet.
