our neighbor has a big dog - it s a mix. Im not exactly sure what it is, but DH thinks it may be part rottweiler or part pit-pull. I've never seen the dog out of the house except for their fenced in backyard. this is the second time it bit DH.
The first time was back in March. Dh knocked on their door to ask for something and they told him to come wait inside...the dog jumped and bit his arm. he was in a sweatshirt and winter coat so he was just bruised. Our neighbors didnt know the dog bit him and DH never said anything. Fast forward to yesterday, our neighbors had DH look at something in their garage, the moment they opened the gate the dog jumped on DH and bit his arm pit area. He tore skin through DHs shirt. They apologized and said this has never happened before but DH said you can tell the owner had a concerned look on his face. Dh said dont worry i am fine but that we need to keep the dog away from our kids.
I know people can report dog bites - im just curious wwyd??

edit to include a photo of the bite after DH cleaned it off...

Re: dog bite wwyd

With a bite like that, I would see the doctor for antibiotic treatment to be safe. I am not sure who that can be reported to. If the neighbors seem agreeable, I would just discuss with them the concerns you have about the dog biting your DC if the dog got out. If the dog didnt get out and doesnt get out, I would personally just not go into their home or their property anymore. Ever. The dog could be acting this way when someone goes onto the property. Did the dog seem angry or excited? My dogs get nuts when excited, and my male will grab our arms but he is not being mad, he is playing very rough. But to an onlooker it may seem angry, but it isn't. So how did the dog seem?

Why didn't your husband mention to them that the dog HAS bit before? I think they have a right to know that.

i wasnt there, but according to DH, the dog was next to our neighbor, and as he (the neighbor) opened the gate and the dog jumped up and bit him. they immediately put the dog in the house and apologized etc

Definitely a tetanus shot if he hasn't had one in the last 10 years, and antibiotics if the doctor thinks so.

I would definitely go to a STAT health or urgent care type place to get it looked at.

Keep it clean, dry and antibiotic ointment
Stay away from the dog.
Cool compress as well

If the pain begins to radiate FROM the wound outward then go see a doc.

Doctor ASAP. Dogs mouths are filthy. My friends dad was bit and he is a md. He didn't go to doctor bc he thought he knew better. 2 days later his arm started to change color and infection was traveling. Better safe than sorry.

At the very least he needs to get to a dr for antibiotics and possibly a tetanus shot.
My godson was bit over the summer, went to the dr and it still got infected.

It definitely needs to be looked at.

As for reporting it. Not sure what I would do.

ETS: I would also mention to the owners that the dog did bite in the past. Although it did not break the skin. They should know about it.

Re: dog bite wwyd

I would absolutely have your dh visit the doctor. Any animal bite warrants medical attention, especially one of that size. When was his last tetanus shot?

I would also have your dh tell the dogs owner that their dog bit him once before too. I am not sure what I would do in your situation, but since this is not the first time the dog has bitten unprovoked, I would seriously think of filing a police report. Whether or not you want it put down is up to your dh. I could never forgive myself for not speaking up if that dog harmed someone else.

It appears that the dog is very protective of their property so I would just make sure to avoid that and have your DC avoid the same. Chat Icon

Your husband should definitely get a tetanus shot if he hasn't had one recently. Ideally you should also call the dog's vet to make sure that the dog is up to date on shots.

You can file a police report, if you want. The police won't do anything, though, unless there are a number of complaints against the same dog/owners.

And I'd definitely be careful about letting your kids near that dog. Sounds scary!

Re: dog bite wwyd

Yes, should have added tetanus shot if needed and also find out dog's vaccination status. I would absolutely have a discussion with your neighbor, and show them the injury just to make sure they always keep their dog controlled.

I would go have it checked out. I wouldnt say too much to the dr, I believe they may have to report it, and if you mention the dog is part pit/rottie! It may get blown out of proportion. Unfortunately both breeds get a bad rap.

Please go to Dr ASAP. If you don't wanna make trouble with the neighbors just stay away from them and the dog. If the dog hasn't gotten out I'd not be too worried but he should have that bite checked out

I'm not positive, but I think once you go to any dr for a dog bite, they will report it. Not saying you shouldn't go, just saying that they will report it, and I believe someone will go look at the dog. definitely have it looked at though!

They will report the bite and it will be investigated. I know that's awkward with your neighbors but there's a reason it's taken so seriously- a dog that bites is dangerous. Especially one that bites twice. Definitely get your DH to the doctor. My friends daughter was bit over the summer so I became familiar with the protocol.

I am pretty certain the neighbor is well aware that his dog bites and should have been certain it was confined before asking your husband over. Your DH absolutely needs to tell him about that first bite and that this second one tore his skin.

He should have the bite looked at and properly cleaned. I am not sure if a tetanus shot is indicated as that is usually for a wound involving metal. Then he should give the medical bill to the neighbor.

Clearly, the neighbor needs to keep a close eye on his dog and not let it near any visitors. Letting him know you went to a doctor puts him on notice. It will probably be reported. Better that than what happened to my sister. She was five years old and playing at a house that had such a dog. It attacked and mauled her badly. She still has the scars and I still remember the blood all over her dress when she came home.

This is not the time to be polite and pass an unpleasant incident off.

I was bit by my neighbors dog - bit me right in the as$ and pulled my pants down in the middle of the street, lol. I had a wound that looked very much like your DH's. I just put hydrogen peroxide and ointment on it every morning and evening until it was noticeably healing and I was fine.

As for reporting the dog... we didn't because we didn't want anything to happen to it. We know (and everyone on the block knows) that it's an aggressive dog and everyone stays away from it. It's good with its owners and their kids, I guess just protective of them.

But, how would you feel if that had happened to your child? It sounds as if the dog was not on the owner's property when it bit you. I would have raised hell. Local laws require dogs to be on leashes when off their owner's properties.

I agree, I'm a dog lover, but I also don't want to live in fear of a neighbor's dog attacking my child in her own yard if the dog were to escape.
These neighbors need to be made aware that this is the second bite.
