Wwyd- dog not on leash
dh and I have been taking walks with dd lately (5 months). The other day a guy down the block was outside with his pit bull . it wasn't on a leash but we didn't think anything of it at the time , just kept on walking without even giving it a second thought.
No fence btw..
Yesterday we walked past again and the pit bull was out, not on a leash and with out an owner. I didn't see it but dh did and said we better cross the street- when I went to the dog charged at us.... like I'm going to bite you charging at us. We are both dog people so I'm not being a sissy about this, I was really very frightened for my baby.
Thankfully the owner stepped out and called the dog- said "get over here you're scaring the crap out of people" no apology or anything.
In hindsight I should have said something yesterday but for whatever reason I didn't. But now I'm afraid to walk by again and god forbid the dog does charge at someone else (and does bite)
I'm thinking of calling the cops and reporting it..
Please don't tell me that pit bulls are misunderstood , It really could have been any big dog. We used to have a German shepherd that was the biggest mush ever but we knew that letting her run free might frighten some people.

Re: Wwyd- dog not on leash
Part of me says to go speak with the guy first...but I'm often a wuss about stuff like that. If you feel comfortable doing so, I'd try that first. If not, maybe I'd try calling animal control before calling the cops?
Pit bull, golden retriever, whatever....I'd feel the same way.

regardless of the breed. dogs need to be leashed. get the house number and call the town. they get a warning first and than a fine.

Re: Wwyd- dog not on leash
I know you are a dog person as I am. But that would scare me too. Any dog off a leash concerns me always. I am not sure I would call anyone and not sure it will get you anywhere. Can you walk another way (not that you should have to but sometimes you just can't win)?

No I definitely could. But what if the dog bites a kid? I would feel horrible for not saying something

I hate to say this but I have a feeling this guy will do whatever he pleases despite warnings. He doesn't sound all "there" anyway to not even apologize to you, kwim? And to even let his dog run around without a leash. He yells at the dog the dog is scaring people? No, you are the owner and YOU are letting YOUR dog scare people.

Re: Wwyd- dog not on leash
My blood is boiling. I have had it this week with dog owners.
Talking to them personally...I haven't gotten anywhere. The world is their dog park.
I live in a deed restricted area, so I am going to start reporting. Does your town have leash laws?
My next door neighbor just bought a yellow lab. I guess since he considers this dog to be friendly, playing catch with it at 6 every night seems to be okay with him. Last week I took baby on a walk, dog ran up, jumped on stroller, i screamed, dog ran off with baby's sock. Wed, playing catch with josh outside...this guy comes out with his dog...dog takes ball and won't give back. I don't need this nonsense in my life. I have mace specifically for the dogs...but it isn't the dog's fault, i would love to mace the owners.
I would have been terrified in your situation. Next time i see the guy, i think i would ask if he is planning on putting up a fence

Re: Wwyd- dog not on leash
Did the dog leave the property? Is it possible they have an electric fence?
I'd be very upset as well.

Re: Wwyd- dog not on leash
Thanks all! Yes the dog came onto the sidewalk so there wasn't an electric fence.
