Dogs and Working 9-5

Do any of you have a dog and leave them for the day at home? If so, what kind of dog, do you keep them in a cage or are they free to roam the apartment/house, and do you have someone walk him/her at some point during the day?

Thanks.

Rudy stays home. We do go home for lunch to let him out. We put him the crate for a little but felt bad so now he has the living room to himself Chat Icon

When I worked 8-4, we just left the dogs free to roam the house alone (but kept the bedroom & bathroom doors closed.)

We have 2 labs: 4 and 5 yrs old.

What kind of a pooch is Rudy? We're debating on an addition to the family..but both work full time and wouldn't be able to get home for lunch. I would feel bad about the crate too.

Three days a week he's home from 8-5 alone. He's confined to one room. He goes to the bathroom before we leave and when we get home. He a 1 yr old maltese/shih tzu.

When I'm home with him and I'm working he has free range and just sleeps all day, so I assume that's what he does when we aren't there.

I work full time and we have a dog. SHe was crated for a while but now she has free roam of the house and we have not had many problems....a few little bumps here and there....I think crate training is a good idea.

Why thank you I HEART EDDIE

Rudy is a Mutt we got him from NSAL. He is a Retriver/chow mix maybe a little shepard too. It only took him about 3 days to understand bathroom = outside!

we both work full time and adopted our goofball chester like 1 1/2 years ago. External Image

i really think it depends on the dog. Chester has MAJOR seperation anxiety and freaks out when even one of us leaves! when i first started my new job, we put him in the basement becasue we felt bad about the crate, but he busted out! LOL he got onto the ktichen table and ate half a tray of brownies, pooped and peed on our new bedspread, etc,etc,etc... LOL so it has to be the crate for him. and he actually doesn't seem to mind it so much. i think it makes him feel secure. when we are home, he sleeps all day anyway, so i'm guessing thats what he does in his crate...
he also doesn't need much excercise, and as long as he gets his walk around the block, hes ok.
BUT, there are some dogs who would need more excercise dyring the day, and some who are more than happy to just hang out free in the house all day... so much depends on the dog... as long as you don't work like 12 hour days, i think its fine- its actually nice to have someone to come home to after work Chat Icon

Thank you, I also think it's the dog. That's why we're looking into getting a dog with little to no exercise requirements...and would probably get a dog walker to come.

My dog is home for 12 hours alone 5 days a week. Not my ideal situation, but we both work far from home. I'm trying to find a job closer because I feel bad for him.

ETA: he has free reign of the house.

Thanks.

If he is going to be home for a long period of time (8 hours or more) my dad goes and lets him out.

Re: Dogs and Working 9-5

I also agree it depends on the dog if you can let loose or crate. Ever consider adopting a housebroken dog? We adopted JJ at 1.5 years and although it's sad we never had him as a puppy it was SO nice not having to housebreak him.

Not sure yet, we're looking at breeds/ages and our living situation.

Thank you all for your info, it really helped!

Re: Dogs and Working 9-5

Casey stays home. She was crated from when we got her at 10 weeks to about 2. My DH would come home at lunch and walk her. Only recently, we have let her stay home alone and roam free on the first floor. She stays in the TV room and kitchen. The dining and living rooms are gated off. The crate was awesome for potty training.

Def look into adopting a young adult or adult dog. They require a lot less attention then a puppy and are already housebroken.

Re: Dogs and Working 9-5

Misty is in the crate anywhere from 8 to 10 hours a day. One of us takes her for a long walk/run in the morning and again at night so she gets her exercise. We tried leaving her out of the crate, but she gets destructive...and we tried having our neighbor come over and let her out, but she won't go out. She likes her crate, though, she will sometimes just go in it to sleep and definitely if people are bugging her and she want's to be left alone.

Re: Dogs and Working 9-5

Boogie is a purebred shih tzu and when I worked full time (at the beginning) would be crated and I would come home during lunch to take him out-so he was not alone too long. then I didnt need to do that anymore-He would have free roam of the downstairs (all hardwood) and I would close the bathroom... he was alone about 8 hours, sometimes if I could , I would go home for lunch and take him out... Now, I work part time and he loves it and I love it.. but I assume, all he did was sleep all day

Re: Dogs and Working 9-5

We have someone walk them 2x a day when we know we're both going to be gone 9-5. DH is on shift work for the time being though so most of the time someone is home. When it was just me (DH was gone for school) I too Piper to day care 2 days a week (Tues, Thurs) and had a walker 2x a day (Mon, Weds, Fri)

Re: Dogs and Working 9-5

Casey and Tally have free reign of the house- except now we keep them from the upstairs in preparation for our baby on the way.

It was better when we had the doggie door into the yard so they could go in and out but we need to repair the fence- DH will be doing that in a few weeks.

Re: Dogs and Working 9-5

No dog should be left home alone for more than 8 hours maximum.

my dogs have free range of their house while we're at work. they have wee wee pads down and Animal Planet on.

the MOST they would ever be left alone is 8 hours and that is only like once a week.
