Dogs w/o teeth
Bella is going to have dental surgery this summer and half her teeth need to be removed, poor thing. Anyone have a dog with missing teeth? Does it majorly impact their lives? My vet swears she'll be fine but I worry...

Re: Dogs w/o teeth
My childhood dog lost quite a few teeth as she got older and the only thing that changed was her diet. We just had to feed her softer food.
I'm sure Bella will be fine! Probably even better, as she'll be more comfortable.

Tallulah had 8 pulled last year 2 this year. She still eats her hard food. I don't think it effected her at all.

Re: Dogs w/o teeth
mine had 8 teeth pulled last year & I was frekaing out b4. but the vet said that dogs gums are almost if not stronger than their teeth. go figure. I gave mine some scrambled eggs after the removal for a few days & then he went right back to dry food,, dont worry your pup will be fine

Re: Dogs w/o teeth
So sorry to hear about your dog!
My MIL has a yorkie who has only one tooth. She has to wet the dog food for the dog to eat, she drinks lots of water now since her tongue hangs out most of the time (no teeth to keep it in), so make sure there is water for the dog to drink. She'll find a way to communicate with you when she needs to go out.
Just make sure you buy treats for her that are soft, or if they are hard, make them tiny pieces (smaller than a finger nail), so the dog an suck on them before swallowing.

My cat has NO teeth We had to pull them all because she was allergic to the enamal on her own teeth!
Her gums calcified and she can eat hard food just fine! Its funny when her and her brother fight and she tries to bite him but just gums him instead!!

Re: Dogs w/o teeth
Are they front teeth? Some dogs tongues hang when they are missing teeth. You may want to ask if that is going to happen. Also ask if the dog will have trouble drinking water.

Re: Dogs w/o teeth
my dog is missing a lot of teeth and the ones he still has aren't in great condition i buy him the really small bite hard food along with his moist food but i get the mushy food as opposed to the sliced ones also i don't give him hard treats or bones he likes pupperoni and snausages and he can still eat the chicken breast treats and the petite size greenies
eta the pp mentioned the tongue hanging, i don't know if it hangs but his mouth does look a little funny when closed he is missing some on one side, and he doesn't have trouble drinking water

My MIL's yorkie tongue hangs out and gets dried out, and the reason she drinks a lot of water, just as clarification.
