donating cord blood to p ublic bank
hey girls,
we decided very recently to donate the baby's cord blood to a public bank. we are delivering at stony brook. of course it doesn't help that i'm due in 10 days - doesn't give us much time to arrange this! BUT, i jstu called Stony Brook hopsital and it turns out they do NOT DO public donation. If you want to do something private, like viacord, you can.... but you can't jsut donate it.

Re: donating cord blood to p ublic bank
the point of cord blood banking is that cord blood contains stem cells specific to your baby and his/her DNA... i don't think that using cord blood from a "donor" would work as well, that's probably why they don't do it.
not sure, that's just what i am thinking.

Re: donating cord blood to p ublic bank
i spoke to my midwife about it, and have done soooooo much research. It is true that family members are probably better matches... but it's also a lot like bone marrow -
it seems like doctors/midwives are being encouraged to encourage (lol) patients to publicly donate cord blood. If everyone did that, no one would have to privately do it!
Anyway, I was just so surprised that a big place to SB would not have some policy for public donation of cord blood.

I asked about this when I delivered too and they didn't do it either (Mercy).

Re: donating cord blood to p ublic bank
A woman I work with has a daughter with non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. She just got a stem cell transplant from a public bank. I wish more people/facilities would make this a priority. I think it's awful that you want to give this gift to world but can't because of some hospitals lack of forward thinking!!

Northshore Manhasset has a public bank that you can donate to.. I think that is the only one on Long Island that does this...
I did it for my first and will do it for my second too...

Re: donating cord blood to p ublic bank
there are companies that will pick up public donations from hospitals that don't have their own banks.
Cyrobanks is one of them. It may be too late for you since you're due soon (they ask for the forms back by your 35th week), but maybe it will help others: http://www.cryo-intl.com/enroll/donating/

its actually quite likely that you can find a match using cord blood. Its not as specialized/specific as something like bone marrow.

that's not true.
cells are not specialized and you have a great chance of finding a donor from a public bank--in fact, if yours is still available and you need it, it's yours
many hospitals offer it and many don't. mine doesn't but i'm hoping that when i call to do the public banking they'll be able to do it.

Re: donating cord blood to p ublic bank
Winthrop didn't either. I was willing to donate, but I couldn't do it there.

Re: donating cord blood to p ublic bank
I think it may also be a matter of budgets and the costs involved. The hospital would need to have a local bank that would pay for transportation and other incidentals involved in collecting and evaluating the cord blood. I believe that if you did donate, your doctor could still charge you the fees that are very common when you bank privately.
