Valerie -- I absolutely agree with your point about public health benefit and I do intend to have my child vaxed for rublella (just not on the front loaded CDC schedule). My concern is that there have been no studies that show it is safe to inject the amounts of aluminum and other chemicals that are in the vaxes into infants -- it gives me cause to pause and I don't want my son to be the guinea pig.

I think it would be a good public health campaign to remind women of the risks of rubella and chickenpox to a fetus and have titer testing done regularly at annual OB exams.

I know some doctors do titers during pregnancy, but some may not? I am not really sure about this. Even if a woman gets a titer and is not immune, she cannot be vaccinated during pregnancy anyway. I understand your concern about not wanting to give your son chemicals, and at least you are making decisions and doing research regarding this, and not just taking the position of all vaccinations are bad across the board just because you heard something about it once or twice. Making informed decisons from reliable sources is what its all about, even if people don't agree with that decision. Im glad that you didn't take my response as an attack, because I sure didn't mean it in that way. Thank you for allowing us to have a discussion in a respectful manner.

I think it is so important that we do discuss and don't just jump to sides -- either all vaccines are great and anyone who doesn't vax is an idiot or all vaxes are bad and anyone who does vax is an idoit. The issue is so much more complex than that and we as much information as possible to make our own decisions.

Another reminder--parents can also get pertussis shots. I don't know all the details but I think it has been found that the whooping cough shots we had as children are no longer protecting us. My DH got a pertussis shot that was given for free to parents of babies in the NICU. I opted to delay it because I had a tetanus shot less than 2 years ago and that shot may have included pertussis. I need to contact the place where I had the shot to see if it had pertussis in it. Also, I was so run down at that time that I did not want to add the stress of another injection. My DH had a very sore shoulder from the shot but I am still glad he got it and will look into it for myself.

I do caution against making sweeping genrealizations about vaccines or people who choose to give or not give them. Yes there are some scarey diseases we have vaccines for, but not all of our vaccines are for scarey diseases (mumps and rubella, for example are harmless to infants).

Mumps are not harmless to all infants and young children they can cause harm in children- My grandfather got mumps at the age of 2 and became deaf for life as a result.

Rubella is also very dangerous to a fetus - my friend is a product of rubella - her mother ended up with rubella while pregnant - she has severe hearing loss, blindness in one eye and severe vision loss in the other, two different eye colors, growth stunt,
