Door to Door
I am pissed. Two guys came to my door to get me to donate money to a cause. It was to help women and children. I told him I was having a rough day, kids are sick and just got home from work. I told him to just get to the point. So, he wanted me to donate money by giving my credit card information. I said, "No, thanks. I don't give out my credit card information that way." He goes on to say to me what if it was your daughter. He asked me her name. I said, No I am not interested. ect ect. So, about an hour or so later they come back. He goes on to say what if it was your two daughters again. We argue, because I don't like his tone. I finally told him this is private properrty to get off or I am calling the police.
I am just so mad. Didn't you get it the first time? Also, DO NOT use my child in the same sentence with missing children. I don't like that. I get it was a good cause, but I don't feel comfortable giving out my personal information to someone who has a badge that anyone could have ordered in the mail. What would you have done?

Re: Door to Door
I would have done EXACTLY what you did, but I might even follow up with a call to the local precinct, this sounds as fishy as hell. Also if you remember the name of the charity find them on the web and shoot an email off to them - any legit organization would get these dudes off the street ASAP.

No legit cause that is door-to-door is going to ask you for you credit card info.

Re: Door to Door
Definitely shady. I don't answer the door for these people and I definitely wouldn't have opened it a second time. There is no way that giving your cc info could be legit and I'm sure soooo many people fall for it! I think you handled it well.

What would I have done?
I would have called the police to let them know that two guys are going door to door asking people for donations via credit cards & one was argumentative. I'd say while I'm not concerned with myself, I am concerned that some of the elderly people on my block may feel intimidated.
And for the record, it's not a good cause. It's a scam.

Re: Door to Door
Wow. So many things wrong with that situation. Definitely something shady with the fact that he only wanted your cc information. And then to take it to the next level by bringing your daughters into his "sales pitch" ? F'ed up on.
Once they came back that second time I definitely would have called the cops and told them what happened.

Re: Door to Door
Now I feel like I should have called the police. I just didn't know what to do as it was happening. I kept on telling him that I would check out the website and I would donate that way if I wanted to. He kept showing me the form he wanted me to fill out and kept saying "if it was your daughter sold into sex trafficing." I just thought I was being extra bitchy because of the stress from work and everyone being sick at my house.
Edited to add: I do open my door, because of kids that usually sell things in my neighborhood (candy, cookies). I don't mind giving cash out if it is a few bucks. But never my credit card info. and other personal information

Re: Door to Door
I think I'd be tempted to tell him that I'd just donated to that cause earlier in the day to the man and woman that came around collecting, but that I had a charity I was collecting for, and would he please donate to that like the other couple had done, and all he had to do was give me his credit card info.

I definitely would have called the cops. Do you know what charity they were saying they were from? I do not like the idea that he used your children as examples...would make me call the cops even more.

Re: Door to Door
You are very lucky that they did not try to force their way in. Home invasions can happen just like that.
Everyone please be careful, never open a door when you are not expecting a visit or service call, or what have you.
It is perfectly fine to talk through a closed a door. Once you have established that the person is legit, then open it...
I'm glad that you were not hurt.

Re: Door to Door
That's really freaky. One, b/c of the credit card thing. Two, because he asked your DD's name. Maybe I watch too much SVU but it just makes me think that he's fishing for info so if he sees your daughter say playing in the front yard, he can call her by name and pretend he's a friend of yours or something. It freaks me out just thinking about it.
Glad they finally left you alone.

Re: Door to Door
I really don't think that legal, it just sounds so fishy. Thank goodness it didn't get bad.
I would've call the cops though. it's one thing when they try to do it over the phone (I torture them) but it's totally different when they come to your house. It's really scary.

Re: Door to Door
"what if it were your daughter?"<---- that is so tacky..as if going door to door and asking for $$ isn't bad enough.
I would tell him to give me some reading material so I can read about his "cause." You handled it well by telling him you are calling the police.

Absolutely. I would still call your police and let them know. My village will always check out solicitors when I call.

Re: Door to Door
If you know the charity that they were from, I would contact them to report what happened. If they tell you that they didn't have reps in the area that day they'll want to know & I'd notify the police as well. If they did have reps, they'll still want to know so that they can speak with and/or re-train them on their approach. I'm sure they don't want their volunteers coming off like predators themselves...

There have been so many home invasions lately, please report this.
I truly hope no one actually gives them their cc info.

No legit cause that is door-to-door is going to ask you for you credit card info.
ITA! Who the hell would give that info out to a random person that showed up at their door?

Re: Door to Door
I hate people that go door to door. 2 summers ago some teenager came to my door trying to sell magazines and i said i didn't want any after he said his whole thing about collecting money for his school and to get a scholarship and what not. so i said hold on i will donate some money and in the back ground when i go to my purse i hear him saying 20's 50's hundreds, i give him $2 and he was like $2 nah keep it... I was like are you serious right now kid, i am not even buying anything. i dont even open my door any more to these people .

Re: Door to Door
This is what I would have done.... NOT opened the door.
there is no way in Helllll I would have opened the door to 2 men while I was home alone with my kids. Never again.
I did the same thing going 4 years back and I swear til this day I kick myself that I opend the door to 2 strange men trying to sell me something. At ANY POINT they could have barged their way in. I thank god it turned out the way it did but I still hate myself for it.
If I don't know you- I don't open the door.

Door to door solicitation should be illegal. I NEVER open my door to anyone. My sitter is instructed to never open the door.

Re: Door to Door
I recently had a problem like this with someone coming to my door. I was in the middle of something and he comes to the door asking how I am, blah, blah, blah. I resent being bothered like this. THen when I said this isn't a good time, he said "is there something wrong today?" That was it for me. I will no longer answer my door now unless I know who it is. It is so rude when these people come, IMO!

ITA our last home there were no regulations so we had them frequently - I never felt safe answering esp after one time I was expecting a package and got someone who was really pushy.
I like that in our village it is illegal to go door to door without getting a permit from the village. You can completely opt out if you want - but basically it is only 2-3 school/youth type groups that get the permits - I think if we get 1-2 a year that is a lot now.
