I was told by the wife of a police officer that these guys are not only scam artists, but they are checking out your house to see what's in it.
Don't answer the door from now on.

I agree, but I can only imagine how many people they have actually convinced into giving out their CC info  You did the right thing, honestly, I will still have called the cops and reported this.

The next time I get one of these assholes at my door I'm going to say I'm a police officer. There should be legislation to stop door harrasment.

It is perfectly fine to talk through a closed a door. Once you have established that the person is legit, then open it...

This exactly...I sometimes, (If I see people going door to door in the neighborhood) put a "absolutely no soliciting" sign inside my storm door as well so they know to not even ring the bell...

I don't answer the door for anyone. Anyone. Family and friends only. (there are even family members I won't answer the door for. But that's a different thread)
Someone even had an edible arrangements sent to my house. I wouldn't answer the door. They left if with my neighbor. I don't trust anyone.
The situation the OP talks about sounds very shady. Especially with all the home invasions recently.

This isn't true. I worked for NYPIRG and we asked for people's credit card numbers.

I would have called the police to let them know that two guys are going door to door asking people for donations via credit cards & one was argumentative. I'd say while I'm not concerned with myself, I am concerned that some of the elderly people on my block may feel intimidated.
And for the record, it's not a good cause. It's a scam.
I would do the same thing this does not sound legit at all
