Dozer killed a squirrel today

We were going into the backyard & all of a sudden Dozer just takes off running. The squirrel was running along the top of our fence, Dozer jumped up onto the fence causing the squirrel to lose its balance. The squirrel dropped to the ground & then started to run towards a tree but Dozer got him 1st. It was horrible. I was a lunatic (totally wrong reaction) screaming DOZER STOP IT, COME HERE, NO, THATS DISGUSTING...He heard blah, blah, blah. Maybe he couldn't hear me over the sounds of the squirrel screaming. I've never heard a squirrel scream -- it was just horrible Chat Icon .
So I tried distracting him by throwing his soccer ball to him. Didn't work. Finally (felt like forever but was probably a minute later) the squirrel is loose & runs 2ft up the tree then just stops & stares at ME !!! Then it just fell to the ground on its back, poor thing! Dozer came to me & we went into the house. Dozer had some blood on his face but it was just a scratch I guess from the squirrels nail. Maybe thats what made him let go.
Then Dozer was very mellow just kind of staring into space for atleast a 1/2 hour. After that he wouldn't leave my side. I think he was in some sort of shock & maybe coming down from the adrenaline rush.

I called animal hospital & they said I could bring the squirrel in, if they are able to help it they will otherwise they would euthanize it.
I felt so bad for the squirrel just laying there. When I brought it to the animal hospital he was still alive but before I left they told me it had died. Poor thing. Chat Icon

Sorry its long, Thanks for reading this far !!

Also, your dog..did the vet say anything about rabies? Does Dozer have all of his shots?

Dozer is up to date on all shots. The vet said not to worry. Although it can happen it is very rare for squirrel to have rabies.

Poor squirrel. We feed the birds at my house and the squirels know to run when they hear the back door click so I do that and wait a few seconds then let Katie out.
That was very nice of you to try and help it. Chat Icon

aww..it's terrible to watch.

It's just an instinct they have, nothing you can do.

I watched my dog battle a huge raccoon one night. Thank God I was able to call him off, That Raccoon was no joke, sitting on top of the fence swinging his claw at my dog's face!!

I usually try to bang on the door, flash the light before I let the dog outside. Give the wildlife a little warning.

It was very nice of you to try to help the squirrel.

Actually I think today we are under attack by the rest of the neighborhood squirrels Chat Icon
They keep walking along the same fence but always 2 at a time. Stopping & staring at Dozer (he sits at the sliding door window). Dozer is going crazy whenever he sees them but they still just sit & stare, taunting him with their tails. I keep having to open the door (while holding onto Dozer) to scare them away.
If anything happens to us, blame the squirrels Chat Icon

i agree. they are probably surveying the landscape to plan their attack. Chat Icon

seriously though, how terrible to witness that! my Frankie always goes nutso over squirrels but i always assume he'd never be quick enough to catch it. I don't know what I'd do if he did, because he's a terrier and i know he'd shake it and break it's neck. May the squirrel rest in peace, poor little guy.
